I posted to him, not really about "Taiwan issue" directly.
(In case you don't know what "Taiwan issue" (台湾问题) means, which I suspect is true, it is a specialized term talking about the status of Taiwan.)

And the Chinese Civil War was a war for all of China. The ROC undoubtedly lost the war. They cannot, in my view, legitimately claim Taiwan as sovereign. That the PRC has not swooped in and formally taken over doesn't change this.
I agree that his wishing death on 1.3+ billion people is ridiculous. The vast majority of those people have no hand in the PRC's government nor its policies. There certainly is plenty of propaganda, but the people who get hit with the consequences of propaganda in PRC are oftentimes the citizens themselves.

The KMT-led ROC is not the same thing as Taiwan today. It's a democratic country with a free press and its own institutions at this point. There is little reason for Taiwanese to become a part of PRC. Virtually none of the inhabitants wish for it, the government manages fine without aid from PRC or otherwise, and the vast majority of the people of the country, especially today, had no hand in the Chinese Civil War. Also, losing a war is not an automatic equivalence to cessation of a country. There are plenty of wars lost that did not require an entire nation to be absorbed and the country to stop existing. There is no necessity for that--and doing so is sometimes a poison pill that ends up eventually causing greater issues.

As for the topic at hand, recent events has probably sown more distrust among the Taiwanese towards the PRC's government. There is a decent widespread sentiment that the PRC goofed really badly at the beginning of that outbreak which has lead to the present situation, and even in Taiwan's generally fractious political world, there is generally some appreciation of the fact that the Taiwanese government handled the situation decently well compared to other countries.

And, as far as I'm concerned, Taiwan is part of China. The ROC lost the Civil War. They don't get to claim territory. They should count their blessings that the PRC has let them live in relative peace for decades.
Situation in Taiwan seems pretty unique to me, China seems very powerful but currently does not appear to order Taiwan around, in any way or by force of Chinese law nor by way of executive orders unlike other countries with outlying territories interestingly. It was similar situation with Hong Kong and Macau with the one country two systems thing however it appears the gap is narrowing these days.

I be curious how it appears Taiwan handled the situation well during the outbreak even though the situation in mainland was dire, apparently they were able to limit the amount of people coming from mainland at the beginning when Lunar New Years started. and people in Taiwan pretty much lived normal lives since mid February amid with more disinfectation stations and people wearing masks and schools were opened after a two week longer than normal lunar New Years winter break. And most people can still work and public transportation still runs. I am not so sure about attractions such as amusement parks, night markets, malls, Taipei 101 observation, the Wulai gondola, and other attractions.

This so reminds me of Chiang Kai Shek back in the 1930's Nanking Decade hushing up all media that spoke about the Japanese encroaching on Chinese territory even when Manchuria was steadily getting gobbled up, a goof up that led ultimately led to the 1936 Sian Incident where he was kidnapped by his own general. Had Chiang been alive today, I'd be sure he'd repeat the same mistakes. That is the way of traditional Confucian Thought. You're lucky when you have a benevolent ruler who is wise and understands the needs of the people and unlucky if you have a ruler who is selfish, stupid, or both but you can never question the ruler. And you are right in that Taiwan/ROC today is different than when Chiang ruled it with an iron fist back in the 50's and 60's. In fact, Chiang's China including his rule on Taiwan up to 1975 more resembles Xi Jin Ping's China nowadays than it does modern day Taiwan.

In the past, anti Chinese riots in Vietnam were against both mainland and taiwan businesses. This is because Taiwan is regarded as in China there.

Some Taiwanese's screaming "we are not Chinese" is hilarious. Even Koreans in America don't do that because they know Asians are a group.

People of big nations all receive hates for various reasons: Americans, Russians, Chinese... and it is a part of life. Europeans like to mock American tourists too, associating them with tons of negative stereotypes. So what? The same applies to Chinese. Nobody really takes Taiwanese or Hong Kongers' whining too seriously.

And in China, there are tons of derogatory words for Taiwanese too. The difference is, educated mainlanders usually do not spread the hatred to westerners (because there is really no hatred), however some Taiwanese are enthusiastic about it.

If you believe in the majority rule, then the mainland Chinese are the Chinese Chinese, their country is China, not Taiwan or Singapore or Macau or HK,their official language is Mandarin, their cuisine, their customs, their appearance and their tastes are not exactly the same as the overseas Chinese in SE Asia or Canada or USA or Argentina,Brazil.
Some American born Chinese think they can live in China find out they find it hard to adjust to local customs, one example is Rusell Wong ,whose father is Chinese and mother is Caucasian,he married a Chinese woman from HK and hope to sell designer man clothese in China,he finally returned to US as the Chinese lifetstyle he finds it hard to adapt.

Taiwan's celebrities are still popular in Mainland China. They are often seen in mainland tv channels and still have many young fans in Mainland China. Comparing all heads from Chiang to Tsai, Ma had the best relation with Mainland. Most mainland people didn't hate Taiwan when Ma Yingjeou was the head, unlike when it was headed by DPP's Chen and Tsai. Most Japanese prefer Tsai not Ma.

People of may age (not *very young) grew up with Taiwanese TV shows etc, and there was no internet when I was a kid, so actually we are less hostile to Taiwan than the younger ones.
