It happened to a friend of mine from South korea, an American asked her where she was from, she replied south korea and the American goes like.... oh i never really met many Chinese people from south korea.

Taiwanese and hongkongers still eat and buy Chinese food in america. So they are generally regarded as Chinese in america. Bruce Lee was actually born in the US with partial European ancestry, but he is still mostly regarded as Chinese than American.
