Hello everyone! I was hoping to get a feel for Incheon from someone who has visited the city, or heard anything positive or negative about it. I am applying for an English teaching position there but I don't know much about the city. Wikipedia is quite vague

Thanks in advance!

I've been to the airport several times. I mean, it's part of the Seoul metro so from that standpoint, if you weren't aware, then you can rest assured knowing you're basically part of the wonderful megacity and can relatively conveniently get around and visit various places around the capital city.

Now if you already knew that and are just seeking some specific descriptions of the vibe and amenities, I can't really help you. I think it is generally a bit newer fwiw. I love Seoul, South Korea in general, and big cities overall so I'd have no hesitation about living in Incheon.

I had a day layover there on Asiana.. was offered a room or a tour.. took the room which had the best sunken tub I have ever used. Walked around a bit, had a meal, and took the van back to the airport. Seemed doable, orderly.. somewhat expensive and lots of traffic. There is a big section on Korea at www.daveseslcafe.com. Hope you are avoiding agents like the plague. Should be better than China. There was a good locked up abroad episode about an English Teacher from the US..

Its been 10 years since I remember but incheon is massive. Similar size to Seoul city. But less crowded. And next to it. So they are connected by rail under 1 hour.

Like Seoul there are many areas, good bad ugly. Bad, Ugly meaning older run down, less desirable more industrial especially near the west ports. But there is a nice new master planned areas that connect via a bridge to incheon airport island.

Entire areas are constantly torn down and rebuilt . Up and down Korea. So it looks and feels new. I bet a lot of aging incheon have been built.

I used to live in Ansan city. And Seoul 10 years ago. 1 hour from Seoul, I thought ansan was too far but realized it wasn't. Ansan had hundreds of teachers that went out to the main bar area. Incheon being bigger has multiple areas for foreigners to go. A big difference is Seoul has more foreigners due to business, immigrants, USA military, teachers, tourists while incheon has much less. So maybe learning the language is more necessary if you want to meet more people easily. But likely be hundreds to thousands of teachers in incheon alone.

Overall I do find most of Korea cities as copy and paste versions. It isn't a large country but it is overly populated. Everything seems tightly compact. I've been. To many cities and from a foreign perspective, everything is generic except parts of Seoul. Meaning in terms of cuisine Seoul has a bigger food choice variety, has more historical places, hometown rich and kpop, has all big buildings and major corporations and companies and big tourists spots.
Incheon is a toned down area like all other non Seoul cities. As I say Seoul is only 1 hour by subway train depending on where you live. I used to takes 70000 won taxi cabs back to ansan with friends or you could wait and take a first morning train back after a weekend night of clubbing.

A giant mega suburb(Population 2.9 Million!) right next to Seoul. Immediately adjacent. Quite literally. Filled with redemption. I really don't know why Incheon isn't officially annexed into Seoul city limits to be honest. Then Seoul goes up from 10 million people to 13 Million citizens.

The scenery is actually quite nice for Incheon especially above ground riding Seoul's own Subway Number 1 Rail. Actually thoroughly goes into this suburb quite well, ironically. Extremely rare situation. You only have to pay 1,350 Korean Won= $1.21 USD one way to go easily between Incheon and a lot of Seoul. The subway map and experience fully verifies. Go on the 1 Train beginning to final stop Mid winter when Sunny, or Cloudy Mid Summer and the atmosphere is wonderful. Almost never goes underground for the 1 Subway. Lots of Hills that look like mountains, and exotic architecture massive buildings, skyline, even some Euro Cathedrals, and noticeable lower or medium density houses wildly scattered. Very comfortable subway unlike NYC or London. And relatively affordable if done right.

If deciding to reside over there among Incheon(I say yes if you visit Seoul often), please live less than 9 Blocks away from the 1 Train Subway! to Soyosan! See on Google Satellite Map the exact degree of access. There are tons of neighborhoods, and you are able to live Seoul without effort even when next door. I couldn't believe how smooth that is for a suburb. Technically still a Seoul experience even when technically separate. Basic final conclusion, isn't only an airport, and endless rewards with Seoul.

Well, I went to Seoul, Busan, Sokcho, Yongin, Incheon, and I am a solid fan of all of them. South Korea goes further than just one city, trust me. Although, almost 50/50, and Seoul is still a bit dominant. Busan, Sokcho are extremely underrated. Please visit them.

South Korea is space age dreamy, far enough away from generic. And quite eclectic generously high variety in architecture if going deeper. Coffeehouses Cafes are quite top rank. Even further numerous than nightlife usually or at least occasionally. I am at one right now. Affordable compared to Japan, Taiwan, Singapore.

The vibes of cities, even much smaller towns indeed feels MASSIVE, although. Higher population density than even NYC. My only complaint is private house ownership rate is incredibly low for South Korea. I really don't know why. There is still enough land space, people are wealthy, and have Democratic freedoms to build their own lot. Why are South Koreans not building a house? One of the lowest own a house rates in all of Planet Earth. Especially compared to Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Romania.

The residential buildings are still quite pleasant, although. I can't believe I had that much peace and quiet in these units all over Seoul! I am sleeping quite fine. After 50 days, I still didn't have even one day of insomnia or even sleep anemia. Winning over the extremes of NYC. At this point, I would have some bad days in my own home town of New York. Other than affordability issues not found in Seoul. Inflation is mostly quite low, fortunately. Amazing Hotels for only $7 USD to $30 per night is surprisingly abundant. NYC is unheard of below $50 to $250 just one night, which is kind of pathetic. Seoul is an alien compared to that one.

I still want my own house, although after a certain point. Outside a massive building. I wonder if some Seoul suburbs such as Incheon has a higher I have a house occupancy frequency ratio. That is owned not rented. Still a high quality of life.

Glad you mentioned Busan. I haven't been there, but I recall looking at the info for teachers, it seemed more desirable than Seoul. I didn't realize rooms were that cheap in Korea.. been paying similar in BKK. And you should add, the 50 USD room in NYC is likely going to be awful. Bloomberg TV used to do the hotel ratings going into the commercial breaks.. They would rate the hotels from the mega Asian cities and they would often get 10s in service and cleanliness. One time, they featured the Amsterdam Hotel in NYC.. I think it got a 2.3, lol. Every bit of 5 points below the other 100 hotels they had featured.

I have to ask my elderly father. He won an all expense paid trip to Korea in 1952-53 by the US military. Got 50 scenic aircraft excursions of North Korea from the air in fact.
He didn't enjoy his trip, not sure why.

The landscape looks very barren, just like it does in all the Korean War movies. Kind of explains why food is expensive there, and few fat people.
