You could go to Hat Yai in the South...or Trang. Phuket is known as Pirate Island.. with the police and local gov being the most corrupt of all. It was once nice.. been a long time. Perhaps, the worst taxis in all of Thailand. I am much more familiar with Hua Hin, which is also undergoing severe economic hardship at the moment. I did enjoy 30 nights at the AB Hotel look at year for 10 to 12 per night. Hate the jetskiis.

Phuket isn't that great IMO, and the Patong beach area is very sleazy and touristy. There still are a couple of nicer quiet places on Phuket to stay at, but you really need to do your homework and look into them.

I'm just not a fan of Phuket at all as it's a giant bar scene that isn't trashy and not my style anymore.

I loved Hua Hin, but I wouldn't call that "the South".

I didn't say it was.. but it is another beach resort that likes to hold people hostage... to charge them 140 THB for a plate of phad Thai that is 35 in Chiang Mai/Rai or 25 in Phichit. And Hua Hin manages to do it without even being an island, and it's an easy train or bus ride from BKK.

Nice sunrise last June in HH. And the beach on a Saturday afternoon.. I think I only spent five hours at the beach that day.. it was raining a lot.

An island not being a crowded city unaffected by typhoons with direct flights to cities in East Asian countries.
Large and equal numbers of Asian and western tourists.

I plan to go to Thailand sometime next year, but reading all the posts on this thread really made me think twice about stepping foot in Phuket. I've heard about Pattaya's sexpats issues, didn't realize it's as bad in Phuket too.

Sigh - hoping Malaysia will open its borders next year.

A bit off topic: if you're not a sexpat and not into bar scene, where should we go in Thailand?

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Ko Samui and PP Island.
Not just a place for single foreigners.
Phuket had many foreign couple or family visitors from Asian and western countries too.
Phuket itself isn't a popular place for westerners looking for work , but attract many western visitors living in other nearby asian countries.

Everywhere. Never found a place in Thailand that wasn't interesting, and it's not like the bar/sex scene envelopes whole cities. Well, maybe Pattaya.

Kinds of acts like Bangkok as a rural village or major town rather than mega city. The rest of Thailand outside of the city is still a very abundant concept. Even in Phuket.

I bet Pattaya, and Chiang Mai are in the most closest situation to this one.

A lot of Asian countries usually have more than one major city with one million+. Thailand almost follows the model of Europe countries with one major city then tons of small towns cities. Although, still very alien. Equal nice. Kind of a bit rare for the Continent.
