Is Taiwan expat scene mostly filled with English Teachers?
I suspect it might be? Much like South Korea. Is that the norm in Taiwan? You see a westerner and the majority of the time, that person is teaching in some kind of school capacity?
When I view youtube, it seems most are talking about teaching English as expats.
Are there others there too, who are are doing different things? Digital Nomad types, Retirees, starting businesses, or anything like that?
A lot of the major tech companies have offices there which include some expat employees with a lot of those being Asian-Americans. There's also some number of people and their families there as part of foreign services from different countries (a lot in Tienmu) and there for study.
It does kinda seem like English teaching is the prevalent career/focus and has been for years. But that's simply anecdotal and not necessarily accurate. Taiwan does intend to dedicate more time and resources to hiring even more English teachers (the govt launched an initiative to have an English-fluent population by 2030) and so this may actually become a reality (the abundance of English teachers flocking to Taiwan, not the goal of 2030 English-fluency which is pretty unrealistic)
That said, I feel like I know a ton of folks who are not in that bucket. Lots of young professionals who work remote, as well as a ton of folks within the startup ecosystem. I know several founders, a number of VCs and Angels who have relocated recently, and of course if we ever make it over there ourselves (we keep delaying the move) then my wife and I would fall in that category as well. But that may be a result of our circle more than the actual reality.
