I’m really fascinated with the rich culture of Bhutan, the geography is gorgeous, it has rich wildlife and biodiversity, and the food looks amazing. They have been a somewhat closed off kingdom for centuries but have been increasingly letting tourists in. It’s not easy to visit (now with COVID it’s pretty much impossible, but once this is over the trend of increased tourism should continue). You have to go through an approved travel agency and pay a daily fee. It also seems difficult to get to. I’d like to add it to my bucket list but want to hear if anyone else has visited and if so, how was the experience. Was it worth the hassle? Would you visit again? If you haven’t visited, do you want to and if not, why not?
Wow…very interesting. Started this thread over a week ago and no bites other than Big City Dreamer who was just nearby Bhutan in India. Thanks for that feedback, could be an option if Bhutan is too hard to get to. If I can ask, what made it “dreamlike?” I was sort of expecting nobody had visited Bhutan but was really hoping someone had! It seems like such an enigmatic, intriguing place to me.

In ancient Hindu mythology, the Himalayas were considered to be an abode of gods. Today, there is a confluence of Hindu, Tibetan and Buddhist cultures in many parts of the Himalayas, including the foothill region that I visited from Darjeeling to Kalimpong to Lolegaon. You will find many beautiful temples and monasteries and scenic views of Mount Kanchenjunga, which is the third tallest mountain peak in the world.
All of this contributes to a dreamlike and spiritual feeling to the region, in my opinion.
