The Hong Kong protest movement has been out of the American news cycle for a while now
see how macau is being treated vs how hong kong is being treated.
people are allowed to travel from and to macau from the mainland without quarantine for sometimes now
while hong kong folks are still being quota and must quarantine for 2 to 3 weeks after arrival, not to mention no tourists from mainland are allowed like it used to.
this signifies that macau is well connected to the mainland and continues to prosper while hong kong is left to suffer as people from hong kong can't visit their family in the mainland and tourism industries are almost dead.

What about the recent crackdown on gambling, that crushed Macau gambling stocks? Or the exclusion of pro-Democracy candidates in Macau. It does not seem like Macau is winning any favours, just avoiding punishments.
And if they truly gave up on Hong Kong, then they would just seal the borders and ignore them, which probably would suit Hong Kong citizens just fine. In reality they are punishing Hong Kong, believing that they can beat them into submission. They think business don't care about social rights, and will do business with Hong Kong anyway. That is wrong.

before all these crackdown,there are much traffic going both ways between HK and China,many HK companies built factories in China or they subcontract work to Chinese companies.
Consumers will take a train into CHINA on weekend to shop,eat and sight see,and come back same day.
China lost HK island to the British in the Opium war,the rest of HK-Kowloon and New Territorie are leased,together they make up HK.
There was a time HK suffered from deep recession,in HK once a woman reaches 33 and man 37,it is hard to find a job,but during that recession,middle age mangers who are fluent in English,can manage thousands to hundred of thousand employees ,familiar with various foreign shipping carriers,customs and assorted English spoken by English,AMerican,Italians,Greek,French,were hired by mainland employers ,average monthly salary over HK$100,000 per month.

Hengjin Island. It's about 3x the size of current Macau; and will be shared with China. A ton of advantages and incentives to Macau citizens and residents. They are also moving a large financial district to Hengjin which will rival Hong Kong potentially.
The corruption crackdown wasn't against Macau, it was more against their own people who are using Macau for corrupt purposes.
