Historically, the original Vietnamese(Kinh) before been ruled by Han-Chinese were considered as an Austro-Asiatic ethnic which is the same group as Cambodian(Mon-khmer). Both Vietnamese (Kinh) and Cambodian (Khmer) are originated in Southeas Asia around Red River Delta and are native of Southeast Asia. The thing that makes Vietnamese(Kinh) a little bit diffrent from Cambodian (Khmer) and other Mon-Khmer ethnics is that they have been colonized by Han-Chinese for around 1000 years (from 111 B.C. to 980 A.D.) So that explains why today they looks a little bit diffrent from other Austro-Asiatic (Mon-khmer) ethnics and also why their culture you are seeing today is heavily influenced by Han-Chinese culture. Modern day Vietnamese are basically product of mixing between original Vietnamese(Mon-Khmer) Southeast asian aboriginal and the Chinese(Han) colonizer.
The Thai(Dai) on another hand has much more northerners origin than the Vietnamese (Kinh) does, also are genetically related to Northeast Asian more than the Vietnamese.
Thai(Dai) were originated in South of China and are considered as a Tai-Kadai ethnic, they were not aboriginal of Southeast Asia like the Vietnamese and Cambodian. The Thai(Dai) moved down to Southeast Asia(modern day Thailand and Laos) in 13th century during the Mongol expansion of Asia (Genghis Khan era).
The original Tai/Dai(majority ethic of Thailand and Laos) are genetically closely related to Zhuang and people in Sichuan and Yunnan of China. Tai/Dai historically were never been directly colonized by Han-Chinese just like Hmong, Zhuang and many other minority ethnicites of China dispite originally related genetically, geographically and ingunistically, so this is the reason why culturally Thai and Laotian modern day culture aren't close to Han-Chinese culture as the Vietnamese does.
Also Thailand is currently world's bigest Han-Chinese Comunity outside of China, there are 9.5 millions of pure 100% Han-Chinese. Also estimated over 50% of total population are Han-Chinese hybird (30-34 million of people are Thai-Chinese). So genetically Thai are more related to Chinese(or Northeast Asian) than Vietnamese does.
By the way culturally Vietnamese is obviously more closer to Han-Chinese than Thai and Laotian does, but not genetically and historical of origin.
Genetically and culturally is diffrent story and have to be divide apart.
The reason why modern day culture of Thai and Laotian are similar to Cambodian is because Tai-kadai people(during the age of migration into Southeast Asia in 13th century) were culturally less developed then the Cambodian of that time. The Tai-Kadai people didn't have any writing system or any knowledge of civilized advance achitechture which in comparison to the Cambodian(Khmer empire) of 8th to 13th century were culturally one the most advance civilization in Asia and the evidence of that is the Angkor Wat we all see today.
During the time Tai-Kadai(Thai/Laotian) people moves down to Southeast Asia and went to war with native people of Southeast Asia which is Mon-Khmer(Vietnamese/Cambodian). Dispite the Tai-kadai were more powerful then the Mon-Khmer military wise, Tai-kadai had to borrows writing system and achitechture knowledge of the Khmer-empire and slowly convinced into Khmer culture sphere because Khmer civilization on that time were considered to be powerful and rich in culture. So this would explains why modern day Thailand and Laos are culturally influenced by Khmer.
This is really the same scenario as how the Mongolian conquered China but during that time the Mongolian were culturally less advance compare to the Chinese dispite they were more powerful military wise, therefore they had to borrows writing system and achitechture knowledge and also many other cultural ideas from the Chinese then the Mongolian slowly get convinced into the Chinese culture sphere dispite being the conqueror with powerful military power.
Here is a video that uses map to explains about all of the historical events in Asia which included migration/rise of power/fall of power of all civilization in Asia started since 3000 BC up until 2019.
https://youtu.be/3S734SZ4bcc
It is obvious in the video that the original homeland of the Thai/Lao/Zhuang(Tai-kadai races) used to located under Yangtze river in China since 3000 BC(5000 years ago). While at the same time the Sinitic people(Han-Chinese) was originated on top of the Yangtze river(Nearby Korean).
Now as for Austronesian races(Malaysian, Indonesian, Filipino) they were originated in Taiwan island and then migrates into The Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia in around 2200BC(4200 years ago). You can search "Austronesian out of Taiwan" if you want more info about this. The "Taiwanese aboriginal people" are closely related to them(and they are physically really resemble each other)
Now it's time for the Austro-Asiantic races (Vietnamese, Cambodian, Mon). It clearly shown that started since 3000 BC, they were originated in Southeast Asia. Did they moved from somewhere else? Nope. Did they moves to anywhere(far enough) during the course of 5000 years time period? Another big Nope. This is a crystal clear conclusion that Austro-Asiantic races (Vietnamese, Cambodian, Mon) are the true native of the Land of Southeast Asia since the dawn of time. They were originated in Southeast Asia, and always been in Southeast Asia.
