Don't think it's any surprise that Asia is rising.
I find it somewhat amusing that the Times of London discovers that Oxford and Cambridge are #1 and #3. That the UK has 10 (12.5%) of the top 82.

Why was it amusing to you? UK universities are what most parents in the world crave for their children to get into…

My apologies. I underestimated the draw of UK universities. But I do think the underlined is not accurate. The US has twice as many foreign students. The UK is #2 or #3 depending on who is counting.

Well it’s mostly because Universities with medium of instructions in English clearly have an upper edge for attracting international students… China also attracts a lot of international students but their tuition are like a few times cheaper than those of English speaking countries.

Now, if you look at the distribution of the GLOBAL TOP 100 universities, the 4 English speaking countries account for more than half at 55! The European Union and Switzerland account for 26 while Asian countries/territories (China / Hong Kong / South Korea / Singapore / Japan) take up the remaining 19.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 (Top 100)
34 : United States
10 : United Kingdom
9 : Germany
7 : China / Australia / Netherlands
5 : Hong Kong
4 : Switzerland / Canada / France
3 : South Korea
2 : Singapore / Japan
1 : Belgium / Sweden

Sad no universities from developing countries made it to the top 100 besides China!

There are multiple rankings out there. The most famous one is called QS university ranking, not sure why you used Times ranking.

Anyway, the result of Times ranking is not great. Getting 4% of top 350 is not impressive when your country represent 18% of the worlds population and GDP. In addition, China has been gaming the ranking for years. For instance, Times are giving many Chinese universities around 50% in international outlook when they should all be close to 0. They admit a bunch of under-qualified international students to increase the score and many of them aren't even in China as they refused to let them come back.

If you go by QS Rankings, Asian universities are even MORE impressive, taking up 75 universities up of the GLOBAL TOP 300! Mainland China + Hong Kong makes up 19 universities, edging out Australia and Germany and are only behind the United States and the United Kingdom.

How is that impressive? Most countries in Asia are nowhere to be seen on the index, only a few countries like Japan, South Korea and Malaysia score okay.

And mainland China's score is very weak. Germany is doing 30 times better than mainland China if you adjust for population. In fact, mainland China is performing similar to Brazil and I haven't seen you getting impressed by them. Hong Kong is doing great of course, especially if you just compare top 100, but that just shows how weak mainland universities are performing.

I Went to the 53rd Ranked Uni on the list, however really I think these lists are very over biased towards English Speaking countries. Still good to see the UQ beat out any university in Sydney
