By travelling to SE Asia, I hope to cut my monthly spending. In order to get a sense for various locations, I've been watching visitor vlogs. In Chang Mai, Ubud, and Hanoi, it appears like everyone rides scooters. to the grocery store, coworking places, etc.

Do you have any recommendations for walkable cities in SE Asia because I don't have a driver's licence? I appreciate your assistance in advance!

We just got back from Chiang Mai. We just got back a few days ago. You can get an inexpensive apartment in the Old City and walk around. If you need to get anywhere many download in the city via motorbike taxi for around 2 dollars each way. People order food this way too. The motorcycle cabbies double as food delivery drivers as well. It’s a pretty neat and efficient system and works particularly well in Chiang Mai as you can get from one side of the city to the other in 20 minutes during non rush hour time.

Folks can live well there for 1500 a month. If you eat local Thai food, many meals are 2 bucks for very good food.

We ran into a lot of folks scoping it out for retirement.

BGC and Makati in Metro Manila are very easy to walk around. People don't really use scooters there. But they're the two most expensive places in the Philippines

Most cities will have areas where you do not need a car. Big cities will have many of these areas. The question is how much can you save when staying in the more expensive parts of the more expensive cities? You'll have to figure that one out.

My suggestions are Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. Certainly no reason you can't do it in smaller cities like Da Nang, Chiang Mai, Penang, etc but you'll be more confined to sections of those cities rather than being able to go anywhere.

Whenever I’m in Bangkok, I always walk everywhere, or take the sky train. A person could easily live in Bangkok and never need a car, motorbike, or scooter.

My wife is from Cebu. It's not a bad place. Interestingly, she has fallen in love with Thailand! I'd rate Cebu higher if only it had decent food. As hard as I try, I just can't warm up to Filipino good and god know knows I've tried!
