I would like to someday visit Syria. Do you think it is safe for an American? If you or someone you know has ever been to Syria what was your's/their impression of it?

I had a friend who visited Syria a few years ago and he just loved it. His dream was to go back whenever possible. I saw pictures he had taken and it really is a wonderful country.
I can't say if it's safe for an American, my friend being French. He had no problems while he was there but was extra careful.

I was in Syria 1.5 years ago. Two weeks. Beautiful country, nice people.Extremely safe, they are very western in every respect. Damascus is nice. I was supposed to go to Aleppo too, but I stayed at Damascus, the old city is fascinating.

I would be very careful with my camera there. If you have the good sense never to photograph anyone or anything remotely official, though, you can discard that worry.

Hi,

I went to Syria last year and I really loved it. I went with an organize group for a tour , because I was a little afraid, because I am a women and I was going to go alone. As a european women, I didnĀ“t find any worried thing. I spent a wonderful time and I found really nice people and very friendly. A lot of hospitality. It was great.

If you want to ask something, just do it. And I am sorry for my english.

That's the mystery. I met 2 Syrian men in an international conference; both were professionals from the same department; and they came to blows; one a Christian and the other a Muslim; the latter was the aggressor.

Colleague of mine visited Syria and loved it. Being an American was no problem and perhaps an advantage. Said the people were cool and the nightlife a blast.

Just remember that it is a police state, so loud opinions of a certain genre would not be a good idea.
