I spent 5 days in Kunming one year (1995). It is nicer than many of China's other large cities in that there are (were?) large trees still growing alongside major boulevards. It might be one of China's greenest cities for the number of parks and small lakes within its borders. The food is great since several minority groups are represented. Other than that, it IS a Chinese city. Lots of air pollution...hawking....spitting....
They call Kunming the city of eternal spring. Since it sits at several thousand feet in elevation, in the south, it does not get hot in the summer like the Furnaces, and doesn't get that cold in the winter. I did not know about the elevation until I left and felt tired after about only 2 hours of walking around.
