He didn't. That would hurt his political career. But I still think it's clear he's a "closet atheist" despite "official statements" to the contrary.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion but that's not what the original post asked.
If Obama had proclaimed he was an atheist, Sarah Palin would be the VP

But it is a vivid reminder of the danger of allowing fools to introduce their myths into laws that override reason, fact, or even common sense.

I think Lincoln confessed at one point that he isn't Christian. He could have other beliefs but he never told the 1860's media if he did. So he might have been an Atheist.
That is pretty good for 1860's

Obama says he is a Christian. I could care less if he actually is or not. I'd rather have an atheist president than one who says God tells him to start wars. But that's just me.
Right now - no, an atheist would not get elected president. Hopefully that will change.

Not in America perhaps but Australia's Prime Minister is atheist, female.....and Welsh!!
Bravo Australia!
Our PM is also atheist.
"The official aim of Pope Benedict XVI lightning-quick visit to Spain was to celebrate the Christian family, helping to close the Catholic World Meeting of Families in Valencia this weekend. Instead, the Pope's much-anticipated handshake and photo op Saturday evening with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero looked more like a heavyweight boxing stare-down of ideas over the direction of Western civilization and the meaning of morality in the modern world."

My "no" is for an atheist getting elected president. I don't doubt that there are atheists in other offices. There are gays in other offices, too - but I doubt that a homosexual could get elected president at this time either. I think all this will change in time (hopefully).

What makes you think we don’t have one now. Obama is well educated, intelligent, and does not attend church. It is a good start if he is not. You can go back in US history and find several non-religious presidents. FDR shows signs of being non religious, and Abe Lincoln was without question a strong Atheist as well as being anti-christian. Jefferson at best was Agnostic, Adam, and most of the founding fathers were also non-christian. The real push from the christian church in the US started in the 1950’s and in my view was an attempt to control a population which had had see the world, and understood more than their predicators. Religion is a tool used to control the masses, and the US sadly is not immune from it siren’s song.
