So another closed - minded, narrow thinking Individual who cannot see a world outside of black and white cannot now understand why or How I can be a thankful person because I don't believe in his diety or his religion. Another example of how religion so limits the mind and the ability to think.
So let me explain, as people here can inderstand. I am thankful that I live in a nation where I can delebrate any holiday I want. It is not forced upon me, nor denied. I can thank the memory of the founding fathers of my nation, THomas Paine, Ben Franklin, Geo Washing ton, etc etc for this .
I am thankful for my family. I am thankful to my wife's doctor for having medical training and finding a way for us to concieve children. I am thankful to mine for saving my life two years ago I am thankful that my kids are healthy, we have money, jobs, a nice house etc.
I am thankful for life, love in my life, fun times, friends.
Some closed minded all or nothing non-thinker is going to come on here and ask "To WHOM ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR THIS?"
I would like to go ahead and point out the primary Buddhistic element of being thankful for everything and everyone. One does not have to have a diety to be a thankful type. It goes along with the rest of the positive thinking , peaceful loving philosophy. Perhaps some should look into it?
It is called being a positive, thankful person. And it is what this holiday is all about to me.

You can be thankful to society and to other people without believing in a god.

I agree that a belief in God isn't necessary to give thanks. However, I see nothing to be thankful for.

Can you elaborate? You "see nothing to be thankful for"?

You don't care to explain that? You don't think we're pretty lucky to be alive, given that the odds were incredibly against it? You aren't grateful to live in a country that doesn't kill atheists (unlike some theocratic nations)? You aren't grateful for little things like internet access?

I find that attitude astounding. There are so many things to be thankful for, even when life sucks. I'm gobsmacked.

I could take all of that or leave it. Doesn't really matter all that much to me.

I'm a pragmatist. "Thankfulness" is wasteful.
