Seriously, this forum should be re-named "Ask an Atheist"
Why do you guys think this is so? Do you think they hope to convert us?
Or do you think they genuinely want to understand us?
It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't the same poster just changing names. And certain theists like to say how obsessed atheists are with religion. They should wonder over here and they would see that apparently theists are obsessed with non religion.
I think many believers don't know any vocal atheists. Therefore we are shrouded in mystery, and they look upon us with curiosity=) Many of them, I think, have never considered, or may be unaware of the substantial merits of the alternative view.

I think it is your first question. There is a rule "no proselytizing" but I think that people are trying to get around it by some very thinly disguised questions regarding atheism and their intentions are really to convert. Many are really not being honest in that although they begin their threads in the form of a question, they really want to preach their sermon. You can tell by the way they ask their "questions."
I don't think the majority want to understand us at all especially when you consider most of these posts come from those who follow a religion that specializes in converting people.

I think it's more that there aren't a lot of controversial topics for atheists to talk about.
I can imagine that if we all got into a room together, it would go something like this:
I think it's more that there aren't a lot of controversial topics for atheists to talk about.
Probably true. We are a group without hyphens. There are Christian-businessmen, Christian-warriors, Christian-music, Christian-stores, Christian-holidays, Christian-schools, Christian-Youth Societies, Christian-relics....
We haven't even got an Atheist-bowling league. We have no edifices, there is no Atheist-recipe book, no Atheist-Channel on our cable, no clergy, and the one thing that we do have in common is a lack of common belief in something.
So it isn't like we can sit around talking about what a good time we all had at Atheist Day at the ballpark.
