In all honesty, if my in laws weren't alive I would no longer bother with any of it. Sometimes keeping the family peace is better than standing up for an argument that has no winners.
No one on my side of the family is religious. We were raised atheist and all our kids are, too. It's the 'old guard' that is still clinging to it.

Yup.
When I would visit the good methodist church in Colorado Springs, I would say the age breakdown was (omitting children who have no choice):

what could we put in its place.
I mean I just love the lights. I also like the unintended effect that different people believe different things spreading the light show, Christmas thing, out so its not to much?

Next week you've got Solstice, Chanukah, and Christmas, all within a few days. All about "Light". Started with the first event, of course.
This thread got me thinking ... ya know, I missed an opportunity.
I should have made my kid play his sport left handed when he started and I could have introduced my kids to a bunch of beliefs around the world during the holidays. Santa, that candle thing, Buddha in a santa hat always made me smile, any number of Hindu things, Chanukahm (I don't know what that is) and my favorite "where is the earth right now? and a coexists plague.

I used to have a coworker, who, like many Hindus, kept a picture of Ganesha in her cubicle. At Christmas, she would decorate her cublicle and there would be a Santa figure standing next to him. Always made me smile.

Personally I wouldn't do anything in its place. You can't get though October without being inundated with decorated trees, wreaths and music in every public place you go. By the time December rolls around I'm sick of it.
Plenty of people celebrate the solstice with trees and lights - the whole pagan shebang without either Odin or Jesus.
Works for me - a solstice IS a natural day to observe, and people have pretty much always done so.
