But then humans are story-making animals. So we live with this contradiction, because we have no choice. Science really amounts to tying our stories to actual material facts as we know them. And if we have no material facts, or if the facts that we do have are still too murky, then what we should say is simply "I don't know."

Thank you all for your insights.

I guess spirituality isn't for me, but I'll continue to enjoy art, crafting, and shopping. Ice cream, I fear, is a thing of the past due to lactose intolerance.

It can be emotionally moving, but usage of the word 'spiritual' introduces a bunch of unnecessary baggage.

That people have a "personal angel" is a recent concoction by x-tians which if I recall correctly started in the early 1990s and has no basis for support in either the Hebrew or Greek texts.

In other words, there was no such thing as a "personal angel" prior to that time.

.

Incorrect.

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven." -- Jesus, quoted by Matthew in his Gospel, Chapter 18 verse 10.

There isn’t an elephant in (or hanging about outside) my room. :-) What does a theist’s opinion have to do with the thread, as the OP specifically asks atheists if we feel it (and that calls for a personal interpretation as well).
Same old Cowboy I see. I am setting out the semantics as I see it (others can argue rather than airily dismiss theist -like) that 'spirituality' can mean a lot of things, but all represented by emotional responses, even in reaction tp logical or practical pluses.

The elephant is outside all our room as we all live in the same world, despite your denial, the Theist view is relevant as the atheist despite your denial and we are not obliged to regard the terms of the topic as a punishable offenmce if we go a bit wider, despite your denial.

Same old Cowboy - says he's an atheist, argues like a Theist. As aggressive and confrontational as ever. It's nice to be back.

That I push back relative to your attempt to control everyone’s narrative (especially mine) or what we ‘should or shouldn’t say’ does not mean I ‘argue like a theist’. Same old Trans. If you had actually read what I said about spirituality, per the thread, it’d be very clear to you I am an atheist.

That said, atheism does not equate to uniformity or a lack of empathy nor does it mean one can’t be in awe of (or question) life.

I guess I'm a dissenting voice here. I do believe myself to be a spiritual person. Not in the sense that possibly most people would perceive spirituality ie being part of a divinity, but in the sense that we are part of a greater whole.
We ARE part of a greater whole. That's not even a belief, it's a fact. We are all made of the same stuff. We share parts of the same DNA with other species. We live in a privileged time where we are learning to understand ourselves and our place in the universe. We FEEL our place in the universe. I do at least. I could go on and expand on this but this in essense is spirituality to me.

Still the old Cowboy. I was pointing some stuff out that seems clear to me. Anyone who disagrees can argue it. But only theists and atheists who argue like them toss out aggressive accusations.

Same old Cowboy, as i said. As in dickering about whether you are realo trulo an atheist or not. You wouldn't be the first atheist that attacked atheists. Usually for political reasons. I remember well enough you fought tooth and nail to retain your 'agnostic' title until you huffilly agreed that atheist was what you were. But you kept right on bashing atheists.

Same old Cowboy.

I fully agree. And I even agree the sense of awe (1) and amazement that the biochemicals that make us up were once parts of stars going Nova. Or that's what science says. So i call it science rather than spiritual, but a Rose by any other name, says Popeye the sailor, would smell just as much.

(1) Not to be confused with Auwe.

Yeah, I'm going "auwe, auwe" over the arguments here.
