This also illustrates the typical misconception that agnosticism is a linear step toward atheism rather than apples and oranges that often coexist. It also illustrates quite well, the fear and loathing heaped in those days upon the unspeakable and unthinkable state of unbelief ... the concept that it is as low as you can possibly go as a human being. While the same sentiment still exists within fundamentalism, in society generally, far more people are indifferent to unbelief today rather than horrified by it.
