Ten thousand people dead in the Philippines isn't proof there is no god. It's one possible explanation. Another is that whatever god(s) there be are absent, indifferent, or sadistic. Or put another way: whatever god(s) there are, are not all powerful, not all knowing and/or not all loving.

One wonders, though, how people get away with dissing 10,000 dead people and their 50,000 or so surviving friends and family (some of who will shortly be dead as well, with all the knock-on effects that implies) as well as the suffering and terror of those 60,000 or so people and the deprivations of the probably hundreds of thousands if not millions displaced, by suggesting they all had it coming because of their "rebellion". You'd think people would turn away from such hateful and arrogant beliefs -- but maybe, like joining the Klan, it just gives you cover for being hateful and arrogant.

The truth is that this is a remarkably kind and loving people who through no fault of their own were born into a culture residing on some islands that barely poke out of the ocean, in the direct path of several typhoons each and every year. They are suffering the consequences of nothing more than the luck of the draw, and the general neglect to deal with global warming by other countries, most of whom enjoy higher elevations above sea level and better infrastructures and more money.

It might be more than chance or bad luck.

What does the catholic priest tell the Filipino (or any) dad who makes $5/hour and already has seven kids? It is "Go ahead, have another kid."

That is still chance and bad luck from the standpoint of the child. It didn't ask to be born or have a hand in its parents decisions or whatever bad advice they got. Nor does anyone have any say in what random culture, family, and socioeconomic condition they come into existence within.

If someone is guilty of something here it is the parents or maybe their priest in your example, and if some agency requires punishment it should fall on the parents or the priest, not the children.

Biological organisms die. All of them.

One way they die is drowning.

Big waves kill many biological organisms, humans among them.

Therefore... God!

The sad part is that in the realm of what I'll call - for lack of a better term - 'religious logic', that sort of nonsense really doesn't stand out as any more nonsensical than most religious attempts at explaining things.

Besides, it's pretty arrogant to assume it was YOUR God. It's more likely to be Neptune or Poseidon...you know....the Gods of the seas and oceans.

So basically, ten thousand people deserved to die for not believing in the right god in the right way? Heartless doesn't even begin to describe such a sentiment.

Wasn't Ray Comfort's other "proof of God" a banana?
Ta-da! God!

Oh, and send money.
