I was reading a thread on psychics, and my eye saw the word psychic and placed the meaning for physics in my head. I thought what an outrage to question the existence of physics, than I went to the opening post and smiled as I saw the question again.
It made me wonder if we are replacing the fake gods of the past with the "religion of science". Will the future humans be offended when their science is challenged, or will they be offended if it is not challenged? Would the religion of science be like Buddhism and relate to philosophy and not a god or religion or be pure logic?

No, "science" is merely a tool. It is not a religion or a philosophy.

However it just happens that science is showing us that reality disproves religion and the claims of ancient books. Religious people don't like that as they've been comfortably and blissfully running the show for millenia, without question or opposition.

So no - REALITY is replacing religion, not science. And this is a good thing. It's called "growing up".

Interesting question. People who get offended at being questioned may THINK they are scientists, but they aren't really. True science welcomes questions.

As for the "religion of science", that is an oxymoron. Religion and science stand for such opposite things, that TRUE science can never become a religion. Religions, by definition require unquestioning faith in something that cannot be proven, while science, by definition, requires questioning everything.

However, I can see your point, too. I think that religion for many people is being replaced by a dedication to the scientific method, but I don't think calling it a "religion" is the right word to use.

It is always possible that if a huge disaster happens at some point in the future and most of the world's writings are lost, future humanity could pick science to worship. Any idea or person about whom little is known is a valid subject of religious worship. The more that can be proven or substantiated, the less likely something is to be worshipped.

I agree with this. Someday, probably not in my lifetime sadly, Reality will win out and people will wake up.

There are scientists who have personal religious beliefs and are faithful members of churches, not all are atheists.

I think most intelligent humans are interested in learning the truth about things they bring into awareness and care about. The search for truth can include the use of manufactured tools and the scientific method. It can also include the use of spiritual tools such as prayer and fasting.

Humans are capable of harnessing both methods of discovery. What's important in my opinion, is that what's discovered happens to be true.

Science doesn't really provide the stability or answers to non-naturalistic questions needed to be a religion.

However there was the positivist "Religion of Humanity" that deemed itself a "Religion of Science." There's still some believers of it in Brazil. (The "science" involved seems to largely be sociology and something like altruistic humanism)

Sorry but the only "truth" you're going to discover by prayer and fasting is that talking to yourself leaves you where you started, and that even McDonald's hamburgers taste like a gourmet meal if you don't eat for a few days.

Oh, but if you fast long enough you may begin to have delusions that your prayers are being answered.
