Yeah, I had already put in my vote for Dahlonega, but if you can time it during the Bear in the Square festival, then it's a really nice event with a good variety of artists there. I couldn't make it this year, but I did go the year before.

There have been some votes for Helen. I dunno - maybe it's just because I'm a stickler for things being accurate, but I don't think authentic Bavarian villages have places that are painted with blue and red paint with an occasional rebel flag hanging on the businesses and beer steins for sale that say, "made in china". LOL. The tubing is ok if you're into that, and supposedly Oktoberfest is pretty good up there. I do like it at Christmastime though - they have it decorated decently and have a funky soap bubble machine behind a building that blows "snow" in the village area.

A couple of Xmas Helen pics (sorry for the watermark, I sell these. Taken a year ago or so)...

tomorrow we're going to Fort Yargo to do some Family Trail Running (translation: more walking than running since the lowest common denominator is 8, nearly 9, years old and truly can't be expected to just run 6 miles in the heat).

But it will be fun. We'll hit the trails and i will get another chance to indoctrinate my kid in the Ecclesiastic Church of Running.

I have a house up at Lake Burton. If I could spend every day of the summer there, I would. Beautiful place. Even off-the-beaten-path hikes around my house have waterfalls, ponds, etc.

Whcih one would you recommend in the N. Ga mountains -- Amicalola Falls, Ana Ruby Falls, Tallulah Falls, or another one? Day trip from northern suburbs. For watching falls, hiking, and any other non-water activity (no boating, etc.)

We visited Asheville recently, and went to downtown Asheville, Sliding Rock, and Chimney Rock. Liked the area, but did not like the fact that these mountians are an hour or more away from Asheville.

Also been going to the N. Ga mountians for day trips this summer.

Question: Should I go to Cherokee for an overnight trip, or stick to day trips to the N Ga mountains this summer. What is there to do in the Cherokee area that I cannot do in the N Ga mountains? (I know there is a casino there, but other than that ...)

Cloudland Canyon in the Northwest Corner of the state is a hidden jewel. Have swum in the pool below the waterfall down in the canyon right under the falls, if one wants to get wet from the actual falls. Does require a swim tho.

i wish that North Georgia had it's own like section in this forum like Atlanta , Augusta, and other locations do. The mountain areas are just such a wonderful place to explore and just be.

Useful info related to tubing in Helen:

-- Make sure you buy the "sticks" (few dollars) that will help you when you get stuck.

-- You can tie the tubes together as well, so remember to get those (just ask for the ties when you get the tubes).

-- There is a 1-1.5 hour version, and a 2-2.5 hr version. We usually go with the shorter one.

-- Add the waterslide for a few dollars more, the kids will love it.

-- Helen is good for a day trip, not really necessary to stay overnight. Just leave not too late in the day.

-- There are a couple of companies -- Cool River tubing (Green tubes) and Helen Tubing (pink tubes). Not sure about any others.

-- Wear footwear that you dont mind getting wet, and that wont slip out of your feet easily
