Last year we moved from Forsyth to Dekalb for work/commute reasons. Looking at school reviews, we picked Austin elementary for our daughter. So far our experience has been very good. She is moving to the 3rd grade this year.
We are in a dilemma of buying a house in the dunwoody area (we own a house in Forsyth with the best elementary, middle and high school).

I am not satisfied with the middle/high school in dekalb based on the school ratings/review.

Could someone shed some light on the New Dunwoody Elementary School? If DES is doing well, then we might consider to continue living in dunwoody.

Thank you in advance for your input.

I've heard mixed reviews. One Mom I talked to has a child who had pneumonia during the winter and was out for 10 days. She repeatedly e-mailed and tried to contact the teacher to get homework sent home, etc... Never received a reply. Although his absence was excused on the administration level, he was assigned zeroes on all those assignments. Apparently the teacher never even noticed he was absent for that many days! How is that even possible, I have no idea, but that was her story. Others I've talked to really like it, so I'd say go over there and visit.

Thank you for the prompt reply, CMMom, any info helps. You are right about visiting the place. I will plan to take a trip to the school. I wonder if the standard at DES is on par with Austin/Vanderlyn. There is no way I will know, unless I hear from parents :-)

I think online school reviews are just a place to start research and not reliable enough for a school decision. I suggest calling the school, talking to an administrator and arranging a visit.

It was the school's first year, but I am curious why you would buy a house in Dunwoody given your concerns about the middle and high school? If you want to do public school, k-12, Dunwoody elementary is the least of your concerns. Go look at Peachtree and Dunwoody as well.

The teachers came from Austin, Vanderlyn and Chesnut with a few who were new to the school. I think most people were happy with the school, I know that it always depends on the teacher.

Thank you all for your responses. lastminutemom, if I can plan to stay in Dunwoody for the next 3 years (my daughter will enter 3rd grade this year, 4th and 5th) I thought we might as well buy/rent a house. Living in an apt has its own pros/cons, one of which is that my child isnt able to run around and play. You are right in that I need to consider middle/high - Peachtree and Dunwoody didnt impress me much
:-( so I am back in the dilemma, should I even be pursuing staying in Dunwoody.
