Hello All, I'm glad I found this forum. I'm relocating to Macon in the middle of August from Toronto, Canada due to family reasons. My wife will be attending Mercer.
I'm currently job hunting in Macon and wondering what are the prospects like for the media industry. My background in TV broadcasting, Corporate Video production (company testimonials, training videos etc), Education/Training videos (producing videos for School Boards), I produce a wide variety of video content for various small businesses and also do the occasional wedding videos here and there. I shoot music videos as well for indie artists.
I'm also looking at positions in ATL since that's the media hub in GA. I'm wondering how practical or feasible it is to commute to ATL from Macon on a daily basis.
Thanks for your help!!
Phew I'm missing Toronto already....
(I posted this in the Macon forum as well).

Google a list of private companies and contact them.
GPB/GA Public Broadcast is located here. Unable to C&P --and whether they have a dime to stay in business is a good question--we are generically 'broke' --cutting back funding in all areas--donations are slim.
There is a Mercer campus in N. Atlanta, if that helps.
Comuting from Macon--it used to take me a couple of hours and that is too long for a daily commute, jmo. If you made the trip biweekly--perhaps that would work.
We have many corporations here--AT&T, CNN and so on. Decatur has some small businesses that are producing videos.
I'm certain there are other options for networking --here's one>>>

it takes us an hour and half to get to downtown atlanta and we live in macon--the vineville area. that is of course, if you dont get stuck in traffic. and there's no telling when one of those traffic jams would come up. i think it's way too far for a daily commute, but i hate driving...let me know if you have any questions about macon--i dont know everything about the town but i might be able to point you in the right direction.

wow the more I hear the less appealing it sounds. I live 5 mins drive from my job here, which is a major luxury I can't even imagine driving that far. Either we move in between ATL & Macon or we nix the ATL idea and stay in Macon.
Yes I have a lot of questions about Macon.
I have experience in Corporate and Educational videos so I'd like to know the Counties in the area so I can do my research on businesses or companies in the area. I don't know if there's any major company with headquatered in the area, I know most are in ATL.
I'd also like to know what School Boards are in the area as well.
Thanks...

The area around Macon is I suppose developing--formerly an agricultural area/conservative.

What if you lived in Atlanta and your wife shared an apartment with another student in Macon during the school week? If her classes were, say, Monday through Thursday, she'd only have to commute twice a week and that might not be too terrible.
By the way, there was an article in the paper a couple of days ago about air service between Atlanta and Macon. It's a 20 minute flight and it only costs $39. That's almost as cheap as driving. You might not do that every week but it could come in handy.

You'll want to live in atlanta. Macon is a very long trip. You'll get stuck everyday at the 75/675 merge and waste 25-40 mins there alone.
TBS is on a hiring blitz due to the NCAA agreement. Atlanta has all of the post production houses to support the media firms downtown. Atlanta will be the East coast Hollywood after the new studios are constructed up near lakewood (still in discussion by some venture capitalist).
