I'm really interested in the vinings area, but I just wanted a comparison of the two. I really like vinings because everything seems to be located there, shops, etc. and it is very close to the city as well as the perimeter area. but are there any differences in the two?

I live in Dunwoody/Sandy Springs, but my kids go to school in the Vinings area. I, too, like both, but Dunwoody has more of a "neighborhood" feel to me. Vinings seems to have a bigger mix of residential and business all in one general area and lots more condos/apartments (albeit nice ones). I think that maybe Dunwoody is more family-oriented, whereas Vinings might be a better area for singles. Not saying that Vinings is bad for families, but I just see more homogeneity in Dunwoody.

Hope that helps!

I'm not certain this discussion will answer your questions but there may be a bit of FYI>>>

posts #23 and #24 give good summaries

Dunwoody/Sandy Springs is located within in minutes of Perimeter Mall--Smyrna/Vinings is 20-30 minutes NW.

Dunwoody/Sandy Springs is older--more developed, many estate homes.

I've lived in both, and when it was time to start a family I picked Dunwoody. It's hard to explain, but there's just something nice about it. I think since the majority of the neighborhoods were built in the 70's and are interconnected (you literally can't tell when you pass from one to the other sometimes) it just feels more cohesive. I also am a big fan of the fact that there are very few 4 lane roads there and you get very little industrial traffic. I also liked the close proximity to 285/400/85.

Smyrna/Vinings is definitely nice, and it does have the advantage of being able to take all back-roads into town, which is a very nice perk.

In our price point, if we hadn't picked Dunwoody, Smyrna would have been pretty high on the list. I would actually live in Smyrna over East Cobb, to be honest with you.
