I have a friend that lives in a one bedroom in midtown for $550 (I think - might be a little more, it's been about a year since he told me this). Says he feels perfectly safe, and he's lived in the area for a while and gets around by foot instead of in a car, so I believe him. Here's the website: OCD Management

The building is small and not new construction, so it flies a bit under the radar. The apartments aren't luxurious, but they've got everything you need and they're very convenient to a lot of stuff in Atlanta.

I'd say you have a lot of options... with that I know definitely (in my area) Smyrna & Vinings would be options for you. When I first moved out here I lived in The Village at Lake Park and I was only making $13 an hour at the point and was able to live comfortably. As I moved up from there I moved over to the Atlanta Rd area which is also probably in your range as far as apartments go. Commute to midtown from Vinings... avoid the traffic and shoot straight down s cobb to bolton rd ---> switch over to Joseph E Boone and ride it right into town. 15 minute trip tops.
