Savannah is GeorgiaĆ¢€™s star performer | Atlanta Business Chronicle

Savannah is Georgia’s best performing large city, according to the Milken Institute’s 2010 Best-Performing Cities Index.

Savannah ranked 40th in the United States, down from 39 in 2009.

Columbus came in at No. 45, compared with 112 the year prior.

Augusta placed 71st, bettering its No. 82 ranking in 2009.

Atlanta ranked 126th, falling from 106 in 2009. Click here to see more details in the report about Atlanta.

The report includes both long-term (five years) and short-term (one year) measurements of employment and salary growth. There are also four measurements of technology output growth.

So, anyone moving to Savannah to job search?

I'll tell you what's even more damaging-- Huntsville, Raliegh, and charleston are more than not drawing away from Atlanta. I recall when this (Atlanta) was the place to go anywhere in the south. The energy, the appeal, the feeling of moving up..

It was a special time, and for better or worse, it has passed.

Small and medium sized cities have a great deal to offer. I think there's a good argument that, in the big picture, they are more effiicient and sensible human settlemnts than big sprawling metropolises. At some point the economies of scale get bogged down with complications like transportation, water and energy usage, clean air and other environmental and governmental problems.
