Let's compare the latest headline news stories in Atlanta with that of another similar sized city. These are the top stories in Atlanta:

Girl, 2, dies as a result of rape, mom's boyfriend charged - Atlanta Crime | Examiner.com

A 2-year-old girl died Sunday afternoon as a result of sexual abuse and her mom’s boyfriend is accused of killing the toddler.

Dallas ‘child porn collector' gets 15 years *| ajc.com Christopher Scott Rabideau was arrested in May following an investigation that uncovered numerous videos depicting child pornography on his personal computer, a Paulding County Sheriff's Office spokesman said. Some of the videos featured children believed to be as young as 6 years old

Man Shot 31 Times In Atlanta; 2 Gunmen At Large - News Story - WSB Atlanta
A man was shot 31 times and found dead near the intersection of Lisbon and Cahoon Streets in southwest Atlanta Saturday, police said.

94-year-old Marietta man still critical after Friday attack *| ajc.com
A 94-year-old man beaten with rock by two teenagers Friday remains in critical condition at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.

Man accused of strangling, assaulting woman *| ajc.com The GBI has taken out warrants against Jorge Montiel, charging him with aggravated sodomy, burglary and murder in the Oct. 13 death of Maria Hernandez-Reyes. Hernandez-Reyes, a 34-year-old mother of two, was found dead in her Park Street home by her husband and a tenant, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said

^these are all front page ajc stories. Now go to sanjosemercury.com and compare a city like San Jose, which is much larger than Atlanta, but also much less violent. The front page of san jose mercury makes no mention of child molesters, murderers, and assaults. Obviously something's wrong with Atlanta! That amount of violence and depravity isn't normal!

San Jose? Why would you compare Atlanta to San Jose? They are not similar at all, except maybe population-wise. Atlanta is a major east coast city. Take a look at Philadelphia's headlines:

These are not the "top stories" in Atlanta. The sentencing of a man arrested in May on child porn charges? The beating of a 94-year-old man that took place a month ago?

Yeah, nice try to manipulate the news to make your own anti-Atlanta agenda appear stronger.

Crime in Atlanta is no worse than any other similarly sized metro.

Try again dude.

fI worked for several years in the newspaper industry. During that time, I can say that one line was pervasive to all aspects of the industry; death sells. I think it has much more to do with the caliber of persons reporting than the actual story. Nice try to paint Atlanta in a bad light though. Those 6 posts you currently have give you mucho credibility.

Perhaps, but the best way to compare cities in this way is to examine violent crime statistics aggregated at the County-wide or Metro-wide level.

The news is a bad source for measuring how much violence occurs. Reason.... 1) if the news has something else more newsworthy ... they ditch the crime stories... when they don't they scavenge the police reports for news. 2) It could be that crime stories in one place over another sells more. 3)San Jose is only 1.8 million people vs. Atlanta's 5.5 million. (unless you want to include Oakland and San Francisco in that search together)

Don't get me wrong Atlanta's crime is worse than some cities, but if you want an accurate picture. This is the wrong way to decide.

This study... Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed shows Atlanta as kind of the middle of the road. Slightly better than average, but there are definitely cities that are better and definitely many that are worse...in some cases far worse.

San Jose did pretty well. They are near the top of the list. I am glad I don't live in Miami, Memphis, or Tuscon from this report.
