We are looking to relocated from Ohio to North Atlanta. Since we have 4 boys, we have been looking at subdivisions with lakes so that they can fish. Are there any alligator problems in the Atlanta area?>
Nope on the Gators.
Yep on the snappers.
Also Water Snakes are abundant but harmless. We do have some Cottonmouths but you can tell them by the way they float on top of the water.
Besides, snakewise, they usually move out when the water becomes disturbed.
There has been some cases where alligators were found in suburban ponds/lakes, but I believe people just dumped them when they could no longer take care of alligators. Just on the safe side, watch out!
It's VERY very rare to find a gator in the Atlanta area, and it's usually one of two things when you do... 1) Someone turned lose a pet, or 2) several mild winters in a row result in a freak gator going a bit further north than usual (again, rare). Most time you have to go at the very least just south of Macon before you start to remotely see them.
Cottonmouth and Copperhead snakes are your biggest worries, and as others have said, some turtles. The "Alligator snapping turtle" is a particularly mean critter that tends to do some damage if it clamps on to you, and will actually attack you if you get too close.
There have been-- maybe three incidents of alligators in ponds in the last 12 years.
About five years ago, I do remember TV coverage about one alligator in a pond. It was on the south side of Atanta, and the alligator was not a small one by any means, but not huge.
It was news for about three days, and it was finally caught.
most of the alligators are in the downtown area near marta five points/underground/woodruff park, they will surround you and ask for spare change to get something to eat. They will get angry if you do not give them money.
