We are considering the Atlanta area when relocating next year. We vacationed there with some friends who live in the Acworth area last year and had a very pleasant experience with the many people we interacted with. I would like to make contact with teachers in the area to discuss employment issues in the various districts within an hours drive or so of Atlanta. I have been warned about Atlanta SD but don't know much about other areas. I am primarily interested in the N. Georgia area up in the mountains (or hills if your from CA with the Sierra Nevada range nearby ). I am currently teaching elementary school (2nd grade, gifted this year - K and 5th in the past) with significant experience teaching ELL (English Language Leaners).

Any information would be great...thanks...

Eric

My suggestions:
Run far away from Atlanta Public Schools.
Cobb County Schools, Fulton County Schools, and Gwinnett Schools are pretty decent. Not familiar with the others.
Hope this helps.

Gwinnett County is awesome. I actually know of some of the elementary schools with a high ESOL population and the administration and staff are wonderful!!! If you have anymore questions, let me know.

If you really want to be in the Mountains, check out Rabun County. Clayton is the county seat, and the schools there are supposed to be excelent. They just built a new elementary school, and the high school has a good reputation. Additionally, there are are some really good private schools in Rabun County: Rabun Gap Nacoochee School, a Montessori school and some Church based schools as well. Out of the mountain regions, Rabun County Towns County and Fannin County have the better schools systems.

There are many teaching jobs in the Atlanta area, but to teach elementary in Atlanta would be too much of an academic shock for you. Decatur is the pits (My wife taught at Avondale elementary and you would not believe the students, parents and administration. We're moving into Gwinnett County. She heard it is great. Good luck!

Horatio

Avondale is part of DeKalb County Schools and not part of the Decatur system. I have heard really bad things lately about the principal at AVondale.

there are lots of good teaching jobs in ATlanta -- and lots of not so good ones.

Frankly, from a teacher's perspective, I think it is the principal who makes the school.

You should find links to various districts as well as job openings there.
