You had a budget of 300k-400k for a house, had Two kids (7 and 11), and were looking for a family/friendly suburb with decent lot, newer home, ammenities, knowing what you know of Atlanta if you could up and move right this minute, where would that be??? Marta would be convenient for commute...

Decatur has a small, university town vibe. It's close to Emory University and has Agnes Scott College in the city limits. It has an excellent school system (that's independent of the larger DeKalb county system). It has great amenities (lots of parks). It has a wonderful business district with a courthouse square where they have a bandstand and frequent events throughout the year. There's a MARTA rail station directly under the courthouse square so it's super convenient to take the train (but it's also only a 15-20 minute drive downtown). Lots of nice restaurants. Cute shops. Very walkable. It's just a really nice place to live. Given its appeal, it's quite expensive, but you should be able to find a 3 bedroom home for $400k or less. Of the things on your list, you'll probably most have to sacrifice lot size, which tend to be pretty small (although there are always exceptions).

I work at 100 Peachtree St. Good to know, because right now I am commuting from pretty far and the husband and I are looking to move closer to Atlanta here soon.

I have to agree City of Decatur has excellent public schools and is very convenient to use MARTA to commute into Downtown. The houses tend to be older there, but there are some infill houses and the area are very nice. Once you are in metro Atlanta, you will get a feel for what you like by driving around and seeing it for yourself if you have not yet.
