I dont really see what the problem is. Yes it sucks when the enforcement officers ticket wrongly as the case with the piedmont people. But by in large paying for parking is normal in any city. The rates are a little higher then Atlanta should command in some areas ( I paid a whopping $2 an hour in front of Centennial Park) and I think they should be tiered depending on where you are parking, but overall its not too bad. It just a bunch of people that continually cry about something. The bakery wants a loading zone in front of their business but then doesnt want to pay $300 a year for it? What now ParkAtlanta is going to have to make sure every single business has a loading zone? An the example of paying $2.99 for a happy meal but $4 to park is just ridiculous considering most Mcdonalds have their own parking lot. It snot based on hoe much you are spending at a business, its base don how long you are parking! This is one way to get revenue to repair potholes etc, that the people are already crying about, otherwise what are you going to do? I do think the 5.5 million the city is getting is pretty low though. I know at university I went to in the midwest, parking enforcement was bringing in over 17 million. I think that a whole city could do better than that. I just hope it doesnt get as bad as philly, who has a show (parking wars) because its so unreasonable.

Just because most city are like this doesnt mean Atlanta should be the same. We are used to free parking here and that just the way it is. Why spend $2 an hour to park in the city when you can go outside the city and park for free. Most people dont even carry change now, we just carry our debit cards. If the city wants more money they should extend that last call, allow alcohol sales in the city, bring in casinos, etc

To me that is pretty ridiculous. Just because it was the way it was doesnt mean it doesnt need to change. Do I like paying for parking, no, but three years ago there wasnt a budget shortfall. Thats the problem with Atlantans, they constantly complain about the city falling apart, poor streets, crappy schools, etc, but dont want to pay anything to improve it. Ga already has a low tax rate, the money has to come from somwhere. Its free to park in suburbs in most other cities also. You go into the city because it has different attractions, restaurants, etc that the suburbs don't have, otherwise why would you waste the gas to drive in the city if its in the suburb you live in? A lot of restaurants have free parking or cheap parking anyway. Plus you had to pay to park in the city anyway, there were just pay meters that required coins (although now there are a lot more meters). This makes it way easier because you can use a credit card, coins or dollars. You want to hear something crazy? I just paid $27 to park at the Hyatt Regency Downtown for 7 hours. I would have loved to have the option to pay $14 instead through city parking. Any alternative to raise revenue would also have huge opposition. Really you would prefer to extend last call so there can be more drunk drivers on the road vs paying a few dollars for parking (and alcohol sales are already allowed in the city)?

But you ok with the city collecting tax revenue from alcohol sales during the day when most people are outside coming to/from work, at happy hours, professional sports games, restaurants, sports bars but the city should not extend the last call late at night when most people are sleep? Doesnt make any sense to me. It's ok to drink and collect tax dollars during the day when kids and most people are outside but the city shouldnt collect that money late at night? If drinking is so bad the last call should be during the day instead of at night, IMO.

Call me cheap or whatever but I dont like paying to park when my tax dollars help build those same roads. I refuse to give Park ATL a dime. I would rather give my $2 to a crackhead. I work in the city and now I drive outside the city limits because I refuse to pay $2 an hour. I still park in the city because I know of a few spots that do not have meters but time those meters pop up I will not spend any money in the city until those meters are removed.

I wonder how much money Mayor Franklin got under the table by allowing this contract?

Awesome you instead waste money on gas and maintenance on your car to avoid a $2 fee (not to mention add to the pollution)? Yes I have no problem with people drinking during the day, because most of them are older people that are responsible and have a few drinks, and not 21 y/o out at 3am trying to get wasted. Last time I checked most of the drunk driving accidents (and fatalities) occur at night, even though there are less people outside.

And apparently the tax dollars you spend just arent cutting it and thats why there is a budget shortfall and it needs to b made up. Would you be ok raising taxes instead? I seriously doubt it.

SMH

You bring up safety issues but in your opinion it's ok for 100k to drink during the day at Nascar, 40k to drink during the day at a Braves game, it's ok for 30k people to drink alcohol at a Hawks game, it's ok for thousands of people to get drunk during the day at a sports bars or a happy hour during the day when kids are outside but nobody should be able to drink at night when only a fraction of those same people are outside? This might be some of the most backward thinking ever...lol

There are more DUI checkpoints at night because there are less people outside. You ever seen a DUI checkpoint on a Friday at 5pm? This summer I went to Day Parties, sports bars, etc every weekend and people drove home drunk because police didn't expect people to drink during the day even though people do.

If drinking is so bad it should be banned 24/7, I just think it's dumb that people are allowed to drink at a bar at 5pm and not at 5am. We can agree to disagree

No because we have plenty of ways to increase revenue besides raising taxes
