New to the Forum...looks like there is alot of good info here.

I recently accepted a job in Atlanta, near the south side of downtown, and need to move pretty quickly (3-4 weeks).

I really dont want to spend more than 700 per month. I am 24, and would like to be near nightlife/entertainment.

I have been told that areas NW of the city are areas I should look at, but that is the only advice I have gotten so far. Any suggestions as to a good location would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The northeastern parts of the city are typically better for this sort of thing than northwestern areas. Try Virginia Highland, Poncey Highland, Midtown, Old Fourth Ward, Inman Park, Grant Park, East Atlanta Village, and Cabbagetown. These neighborhoods are an array of price points, safety levels, and nightlife proximity, but they are some of the trendier intown areas and which one is right for you is a matter of personal choice and preference. If you let us know more about your preferences, we can advise more.

A studio in each of these areas shouldn't exceed $700, although I'm sure there are some that do. 1BR will be more challenging in some of the areas, 2BR will largely be unavailable with that price constraint (although crappy ones do exist). Independent, older apartments will run cheaper than newer complexes with amenities (craigslist is a good place to look).

Always make sure to adjust for utilities--many older apartments include water & sewer, which would run about $30-$50 for a single person in Atlanta (we have expensive water despite being one of the rainiest cities in the country).

The westside has lots of up and coming areas, but it used to be more industrial so there is very little walkability at this point.

Good luck!

testa50 provided some good suggestions.

Another option is the N Decatur/Emory area--Toco Hill to some. A number of young professionals live in this area--convenient to downtown and midtown.

Apartments can be found along N Druid Hills Rd, LaVista and Briarcliff Rds.

I live in Old Fourth Ward and love it (as you can see by my name). It's definitely a bit more up and coming than the Highlands or Midtown but you're money will also go a lot farther, plus you can't beat the commute...you'd probably have 10 minutes door-to-door to downtown. If you need ideas for specific places to look send me a message and I can try to point you in the right direction - hope that helps
