I want to get some input from you guys. Now I live in a one bedroom apt. It is total electric but there is no way in hell that I could have used that much electricity, especially since I work five days a week and I am only really at home during the weekends. At my old apt, my electric bill was never over $120.00.

I do understand that GA Power raised their rates but that amount of usage is just insane to me. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

My bill is over 200 bucks and I just want to scream!

I would double check it, unless you left the heat on. I live in an 1200 square foot 1 bedroom and my electric bill averages $75.

It's not unfathomable. You likely have a heat pump acting as your main source of heat, which is fairly efficient down to around 40 degrees. Below that, heat pumps don't work well, so there's usually an electric strip heater that kicks in- that uses far more electricity to maintain the same temps that the heat pump was maintaining when the weather was warmer. Your electric bill jumped because the temps have been so low lately, so you've been using the heat strip 90% of the time.

If it makes you feel better, my electric bill was close to $200 this past month and I have GAS heat.

It's been freezing cold in addition to the rate increase. You could dispute the bill and they can investigate but I don't think it will do any good. Call GP and make arrangements.

There is even a remote chance a neighbor is stealing your power.

It doesn't sound right. We used 1329 kWh last month in an approx 3500 sq ft home with 5 people here since it was school break. We do have gas heat and a gas stove, but the boys use a lot of electronics when they're around.

You can always go check your meter yourself. Your bill should include your old and new reading as well as the dates of those readings. You can compute your average per day usage, check the meter (if it is lower than the most recent reading, then it was just a misread, or possibly it rolled over), and see if that average would explain your current reading relative to the most recent reading on your bill. If that average is consistent with your current reading, then you probably really are using that much power and should perhaps check your appliances.

Id have to agree it still sounds very high, but it really depends on what the user has plugged in, what the temp is set to, etc. I just got my Dec bill and it was $110 (around 1100 KW) vs the normal $75, and that was for 1 person. What has your bill been in other months, or was this the first month you moved into the new place?

You sure we're not neighbors? I live in an apt in Dekalb county. I have GA Power. Almost $200 last summer. I damn near flipped. When I lived in Gwinnett in a house, my bill was never over $120 either. But then again, it was not GA Power.
