what horrifies me is that in some counties, the alcohol sale ban is actually based on referendums! which means residents(mostly evangelical Christians) who believe they should be entitled to shove their view into others throats are indeed the majority!

I don't care that much about retail sales on Sunday, although it's an annoyance and is clearly a religion-based encroachment on constitutional freedoms. Would the people who support the Sunday ban be as enthusiastic if we had a majority that decided to institute sharia law?

On a practical level, about the only effect it would have on me personally is that we'd like to visit the wine shops on weekends.

I'm new to the area and I've been thwarted by this stupid law several times, when I've innocently attempted to pick up a six pack after mowing my lawn on a Sunday. If it is somehow rooted in Christian values, the supporters of this law need to go back and check their New Testament. One of Jesus' most famous miracles involves turning water into wine during the Marriage at Cana, Jesus and his followers drank wine at the last supper, and Christ told his followers that wine represented his blood, and Catholics perform this ritual every Sunday by drinking sacramental wine along with taking the host. And supposedly God rested on Sunday after spending a week creating the universe (hence Sunday being designated as a holy day). Do you mean to tell me he didn't kick back in his armchair with a cold one at that point to admire his handiwork?

I'd be very interested to see whether these laws would stand up to constitutional scrutiny. Anyone know if they've been formally challenged here or in other states that have similar prohibitions? Results?

I hope Mayor Reed and the Council have considered the fact that they may have to pay for this for all eternity.

Pay for it in what way? This is going to pass by a huge margin in the city. Making the majority happy is a smart political move.
