our family loves watching marching bands and i read in the paper that the battle of the bands is tomorrow at the georgia dome. has anyone attended this before? our kids are 5, 11 and 13. is this a family friendly event or is it more for college kids? thanks.

Yes it is a family event. You will see a great deal of college students also. I think your kids will enjoy it. Get your tickets ASAP!

I went several years ago and it was very family friendly, lots of fun. There were plenty of families of band members so there was a diverse age group from young kids to grandmas, not just college aged supporters.

A friend who participated in 2012 said the bands' routines are prohibited from any non-family friendly content or behavior...no references to drugs/alcohol/offensive content/etc and they themselves cannot partake in any of that either while at competition so its not a "party" atmosphere like you'd find at a SEC game. I can't recall if the dome even sold beer when I went and overall it was less "racy" than certain Grady High halftime spirit corps dance routines I saw in the 2000s

I plan on going again this year as it is a lot of fun and a great way to experience this HBCU cultural tradition.

I'm such a geek when it comes to this. I love watching a good battle of the bands.

Of course, this is a battle of the "black" bands, i.e show style bands ... this is not the kind of marching band performance you'll see in those areas of the metro where drum corps / Bands of America style marching is so deeply entrenched, i.e. Cobb, Fayette, North Fulton, Paulding, Forsyth, Gwinnnett, Henry County, South Georgia, or on campus at the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, etc. BIG difference ...

I can appreciate both types, however ... a lot of the black high school band programs in Metro Atlanta are not very musical. They're rather disgusting, actually ... scantily clad girls simulating sex on a football field is NOT marching band.

And a lot of the white bands are boring, female dancers with absolutely no rhythm that are about as entertaining as watching a bagpipe show. See how opinions work?
