It's a great song, especially the Ray Charles version, but what many don't know is that it was written by a guy from Indiana for his sister....her name was Georgia.

Yes its a classic song though since Michael Bolton caterwauled over it some years ago it has become mostly a vehicle for over-singing and vocal histrionics. For better or worse budding singers feel they have to sing up and down the scales, use trills, excessive vibrato, and break into that long cliched Nu-R&B falsetto ,(all in the space of one line), when just a simple melodic run would be much better. Rarely do you hear a singer who approaches this song with respect and a solid feel for the chord changes. Its all about "check me out !". There are exceptions but very few. As far as over-singing goes - Christina Aguliera demonstrated on the SuperBowl that , unfortunately, its still a popular thing to do.

Yes there are...I'm afraid it's a tie between "Oklahoma" and "Rocky Top" (Tennessee) as the best state song. "Sweet Home Alabama" sounds good for a state song but its lyrics are sort of a downer.
