Apparently residents of the Atlanta metro area have developed a reputation for clipping coupons and coming up with ways to save money when doing their shopping. Bloomberg Businessweek recently put together a list of “America’s Most Extreme Places,” which includes labeling Seattle as the city with the most consumer debt and Las Vegas as the city with the most car thefts. It might not be too surprising that Manhattan was found to be the most populated place in America, or that Hialeah, Florida has the largest immigrant population in the country.

I wonder how much this ranking has to do with Coupon Mom being in Atlanta. I am sure that she started with local shows or radio before moving on to Oprah, etc. Not sure if Clark Howard had something to do with it too.

I was thinking the Clark Howard influence for Atlanta, not sure really, but was a guess. I am surprised by such an article actually, but the more you read, the more you learn.

I thought of Clark Howard as well, just like the fact that there is a large libertarian population in Atlanta due to the influence of Neal Boortz.

Somewhere along the line I've seen reports that said per capita, Atlanta has more retail shops than any other North American city, too. I seem to remember somewhere Atlanta getting the distinction of being on the cities in the U.S. where the most number of people considered shopping a "hobby". I don't see how even with the recession you could have that label and be the most "frugal" of cities.

These lists are always BS. Kind of like how they do things like "Happiest City" or "Most Healthy City" etc and then they list these little small towns alongside huge major cities in the "list".

Speaking of Clark Howard, I have heard -- and believe it to be 100 percent true -- that thanks to him, Metro Atlantans are the most consumer-savvy population in the country. Clark has been a media icon here for 20-plus years, and it is impossible for anyone to live here and not be aware of the basics he always preaches; Don't use fake credit/debit cards, never purchase factory warranties, don't buy rental car insurance, fly cheap and stay cheaper. Wish I could remember who determined Atlantans were so consumer smart; maybe Consumer Reports?

They call it frugal, i call it poor.

ATL is up in debt like crazy. That's not frugal. That is broke!

People here in Atlanta tend to be smart. We know the value of a dollar and how to live off the land if we have to.

Most people I know in Atlanta are incapable of walking up more than one flight of stairs without needing to call an ambulance, so I don't know about the living off the land thing.
