I live in North-East Cobb (further north than you're considering) and I suspect the other posters who suggest Decatur would likely suit you better, are correct. However, in the interest of providing full information, I have the impression there's plenty of dance in East Cobb. This studio Atlanta Dance Studios, Marietta Dance Classes and Dancing Lessons in Atlanta Georgia Area by Rhythm Dance Center seems popular with friends of my daughter.

Also there is The British Academy of Performing Arts & Dance Studio in Marietta, GA

I think they are more focused on ballet but offer a lot of other choices.

Decatur is definitely the right choice for you. (And I am not a Decatur-ite being a booster.) You are not going to find the open spaces you are used to in either place, but Decatur is a much more outdoor-centric, walkable community. You would walk to coffee, dinner, ice cream, the bookstore (Little Shop of Stories is GREAT-http://www.littleshopofstories.com/), etc. The square has concerts, fireworks, etc. There is a twice-per-week farmers market all year (Decatur Farmers Market). Also lots of festivals (Decatur Beach Party 6/18/2010 - inDECATUR, Decatur Arts Festival 2011), including a book festival that has become huge (AJC Decatur Book Festival | The Largest Independent Book Festival in the Country and a Year Round Literary Community).

The other plus is that your husband's commute would most likely be non-interstate. Depending on where he is, it would might be as long from Decatur to Midtown as East Cobb to Midtown, but it would be more stable (if there are accidents, you have more surface street options to circumvent them) and more pleasant going to Decatur.

There aren't really any trails and open spaces like you are talking about (wouldn't that be nice!), but most of the neighborhoods have their own little parks to at least give some communal green space. You might want to consider putting money aside to buy a cabin at some point. While not mountains by your standard, the north Georgia mountains are only 1.5 hours away from Decatur and have plenty of options for hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. Look at Elijay or Blue Ridge for starters.

I don't know anything about dirtbiking... But know a lot about dance. Atlanta has a very strong dance community. My daughter takes at the Atlanta Ballet Centre (The Centre for Dance Education at Atlanta Ballet). They do have a studio in East Cobb, but their main center (where the classes for older kids are all located) is west of midtown. Not really convenient to either Decatur or East Cobb, but you say you do a lot of driving for dance now. I can't say enough about the training there. Just fantastic, and not overly competitive. If you want something closer or more diverse (Atlanta Ballet offers other types of dance, but the focus is of course ballet) there are a number of reputable schools. The Decatur School of Ballet (DSOB: home) offers a wider range of classes and is right in the city of Decatur. Decatur also has a modern dance company, http://www.coredance.org/, with a studio on the square.

I don't live in Decatur (actually live closer to East Cobb now), but based on your post it seems like a better fit. You might actually want to shoot yourself among the East Cobb supermoms (kidding!).

You might also want to check out the Virginia Highland neighborhood. It is only a few minutes from Decatur and you are very close to Piedmont Park as well... IMO the best park in the city. This is coming from someone who moved to Atlanta from Denver and I absolutely understand what you mean about taking the park and trail system for granted in Colorado. If you have any specific questions as you get closer to making your final decision just pm me and I will do my best to help you out
