I can think of at least one other major public drinking water reservoir that is a park open to the public. I used to live in Pittsburgh, PA and the Highland Park neighborhood there has a huge open reservoir with a walking/jogging track around it surrounded by park grounds. There is even a zoo and a public pool in the surrounding areas of the park.

Maybe if you show some examples of other cities doing this same type of thing it will help.

Great idea! Actually, one of the Beltline developers mentioned to me that they were looking for examples of other cities that have effectively managed a reservoir alongside a public park. I'll try to dig around on this.

If anyone else has other suggestions, please post 'em!

Anyone know the status of the Water Works Park on the West side of town?

It's been a while since we've had anything of note to update, but here's one juicy tidbit, courtesy of twitter:
  1. Waterworks Park, ATL ‏@WaterworksPark 18 Oct
@yadrean Will you continue to push for the reopening of the Waterworks parkspace in your next term? Atlanta residents need more parkspace!
    Expand
  2. Yolanda Adrean ‏@yadrean 22 Oct
@WaterworksPark Yes! I am working with Parks and Watershed and you can expect something in January or February!

In case you're not familiar, Yolanda Adrean is a councilwoman (for District 8, covering much of Buckhead, but also Berkeley Park, which neighbors the Waterworks to the north).

If possible, please spread the word on this by sharing the info on facebook or twitter (preferably retweeting Adrean's message above). Please write Mayor Reed and your councilperson this week or next week to say you're strongly in support of re-opening this park. Our elected officials are most open to constituents in the weeks leading up to election. And if public demand is there, they'll make this a major priority sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, it's also very helpful to follow the @WaterworksPark twitter feed and like the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Atlan...77646932282622

Updates will be posted on those sites. But increased numbers of likes/followers helps to add political "weight" to the effort.

That looks like it would be a really cool park. Thanks for the links, info, and everything.

I was over in the area at a restaurant on Huff Rd recently. Based on the route I took down Northside, I had to take 17th and Howell Mill to get there, but I don't remember seeing the fenced off area. In all fairness, I was kind of focused on finding my destination lol.

More updates... if any of you have a spare moment, please write or call your city councilperson and mention you're in favor of reopening this parkspace.

This would be a huge plus for the city. Go, Yolanda!!

Hopefully the rest of the council will get on board as well. This is a no-brainer.

If you could post each councilperson's email and phone number I am sure more of us will do so.
