Uh, do you guys have any idea how much a Connector viaduct or tunnel would cost, even for one lane in each direction? And even if we were somehow able to convince the federal government to earmark that kind of money, do you realize how long this would take and what kind of construction mess this would cause? The 14th Street bridge delays would be a walk in the park compared to that!

I still don't understand why the answer always seems to be more roads, more lanes, and more cars. I thought the idea was to get AWAY from that...

I like the idea of local and express lanes. The first place I saw this extensively was NW of DC traveling towards Pennsylvania. I also agree that there are some bad drivers in Georgia. I attribute it to limited arterial connectivity but I get a burst of road rage every time I get on the highway behind someone going 35 mph when everyone else is going 70.

I always wanted to remedy the merging of 85 and 75 and rip the connector apart to help traffic flow better... well, rip apart in name only, the current connector would stay 75. I wanted 85 to go west at the Brookwood merger and then loop south on the west side of downtown, probably overlaying Northside drive, then continue south parallel to 75 to the airport. 20 and Lakewood Fwy would connect the two to the south. This would give a full freeway ring around downtown like both Dallas and Houston have.

But so much development has come since (Atlantic Station, World Congress CTR, GA Dome, etc) that you really couldn't do this now.

Ha! That might work...by the year 2060. Maybe we could literally go for broke and try to outdo Boston's Big Dig...

By 2060 we won't need roads, just George Jetson-mobiles.

You want my 2 cents? Build a new beautiful top deck for the connector. The bottom is for traffic that needs to exit/enter the city. The top deck is an "EXPRESS" for vehicles that need to just go through downtown without stopping in downtown. Give room for a Marta line to stop at ATL Station and then to go to Cobb.

Now vote for me as Mayor
Excellent Idea.

Y'all do realize that eventually they are planning to have 2 of the existing lanes through downtown be "managed" aka tolled as a way to combat congestion. It's going to make things even worse.

Double-decking the connector is the best idea.

Something that I think would help a lot and wouldn't cost a zillion dollars is simply painting the walls of the Connector as murals. Then add some landscaping that blends in and gives the illusion of greenspace.

I've always loved the freeway murals in L.A., although I know they've suffered from vandalism. If we did something like that here, we could protect them with razor wire and laser-sighted sharpshooters placed every half mile or so.
