Well I'm not native to Charlotte but I've lived all my adult life (post undergrad) in the Charlotte area. But yeah I do live out in Cherokee County which does feel a bit isolated, but that's not really the reason I'm moving back since I have the option to live and work much closer to Atlanta.

Atlanta is not the answer for every black young professional even though there is a high percentage of black young professionals here in Atlanta. You have to go where your most comfortable. Atlanta isnt for everyone I tell my friends Up north that everytime they consider moving down here for a certain lifestyle.

Right, and that doesn't mean that Atlanta is a bad city or anything. Some cities are just a better fit for different people, whether they are larger or smaller. You just have to find your niche.

I'm white and from Charlotte... and my girlfriend and I moved to Atlanta (Midtown to be exact) and we really like it.

1) I couldn't find a job in Charlotte after I graduated but I did get a good job in Atlanta. For example, the company I work for is based in NY but has other offices around the country including Atlanta and Charlotte. However, the Charlotte office only has 5 people and the Atlanta office has about 60 people, which means more opportunities here in Atlanta. That's how it tends to be in Charlotte - there's just more opportunities in ATL at least for recent college grads. I would say 90% of the people I keep in touch with from school that graduated and stayed in Charlotte still don't have jobs there. I've met many people around my age from NC and even Charlotte (people who went to Chapel Hill, Duke, NC State) in Atlanta that are here because of work and they like it.

2) My girlfriend is on a creative career path as an interior design major and Atlanta is a much better city for creative careers, especially design - you have ADAC (ADAC - Welcome), Modern Atlanta (Modern Atlanta), many more creative job opportunities, and more ways to further your education with SCAD, GSU (some design degrees), and Georgia State (well respected design and architecture degrees). She also has a job here in Atlanta with a design firm.

3) Atlanta just feels more "real" to me. My parents still live in Charlotte, so I do go visit every once in awhile and it's just so stale to me - I'm not sure how to explain it but all I know is I just can't live there ever again. The restaurants, the shopping, the nightlife in Atlanta are much better to me. We love Asian culture and there is a huge Asian population in the metro area - you have places like Mega Mart and Buford Highway with all different kinds of authentic restaurants and even private room karaoke places which you just don't have that kind of concentration in Charlotte and although a lot of it is in the suburbs, it's better than nothing. We just like the diversity of things to do compared to Charlotte and we find the people here to be a lot more to our liking. I understand this is all subjective and not everyone will feel the same way as we do.

Basically you need to ask yourself, do you want to be in a large metro area or a mid-sized metro area? The types of people and the scale of things to do will be different so it is all what you prefer.

I graduated from college in 2003 in the Charlotte area and have several college friends and associates who are gainfully employed in the Charlotte area in several sectors including education, human resources, finance, IT, retail, customer service, sales, etc. I do agree that creative careers like design are not Charlotte's forte but it does do well across a broad array of sectors.

I graduated in 2009 from UNC Charlotte as did the people I went to college with. The people I know in finance/accounting seemed to do OK in Charlotte (that's sort of a given) but in marketing and other areas like design, not so much. From personal experience, Atlanta has more opportunities in more sectors and overall companies that are here have a larger presence then in smaller cities like Charlotte. So like I said, it depends on what you prefer - a relatively large metro area or a more mid-sized metro area.

Well that's to be expected since Atlanta is over twice the size of Charlotte. But Charlotte does quite well in many sectors for a city its size.
