Atlanta and Charlotte have always been on the top of my relocation list. I'm interested in a nice, safe area in the Atlanta area. I do not want to look over my shoulder everytime I leave and enter my home. I am looking to rent first and buy later. I either work from home or travel so the commute is not an issue. My children are 22, 15 and 4 so something for "fun" for each would be great! If more information is needed please advise! If you could also advise which areas to stay away from along with nice areas it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Alpharetta (North metro Atlanta).

One of the better suburbs with low crime overall. It's convenient to GA400 which is a straight shot into the City, or a 45 minute drive to the North Georgia area with lots of recreational stuff (outlet mall, arts and crafts towns, etc). A large mall (Northpoint) and shopping area is in that area. If you need to go to the airport, you can drive down GA400 and park/drop off at a MARTA rail station and take the train all the way to the airport or City, though traffic can get bad on GA400 during rush hours (since you say you won't be daily commuting that shouldn't be an issue).

Cross Charlotte off of your list....Charlotte is stale/boring/uneventful compared to Atlanta...Atlanta has far better suburbs/more diversity/and is not as conservative as Charlotte.....At least in Atlanta the sidewalks don't roll up at 6PM....Trust me, as a native of Charlotte (btw, trying to relocate elsewhere)....I know what I speak of.....Take your chances in Atlanta....you will not be sorry...

Co-sign. I lived in Charlotte for two years and was bored out of my mind. I recently moved to Atlanta and am loving it here.

The best things about Atlanta are the uncommercial events here

It's all relative. I moved to metro Atlanta from Charlotte a few months ago and plan to move back to Charlotte later this year--and I'm supposedly part of Atlanta's target demographic (young single Black male professional). Charlotte has more than enough to do to keep you occupied and I was never bored there. I enjoy Atlanta a great deal, but just prefer living in Charlotte. I'd advise the OP to take a trip to each city to get a feel for them and then go from there.

I not sure but I think I read a post from you saying you like live in Cherokee county outside Atlanta core counties. Hell I may want move back to Charlotte too if live that for out from Atlanta. But Charlotte is your hometown isn't?

To the OP, Akhenaton is right it's all relative people have different preference but don’t move to a Atlanta boondocks county because it’s not the same feel as if your living closer in. May be that's what you want, i don't know. I lived in Doraville, Dunwoody, Norcross, Decatur, Smyrna and Griffin. Griffin was a lot slower pace compared to other cities closer in. Chicago, Atlanta and DFW, are where I spent most of my life. Charlotte is a raising city, and it was OK but it's was just too small for me.

It' all about preference and values. If time is more valuable versus having to plan many activities based on traffic patterns, then Charlotte is the answer. If you value big city amenities (especially for Black people), then Atlanta is a much better fit.

Does Charlotte have traffic issues and selective big city amenities? Sure, but as can be expected, a different scale due to metro sizes. Can you avoid the traffic hassles of a big city like Atlanta? Absolutely, but it ain't easy. The idea that every young Black person will enjoy Atlanta is short-sighted or every young Black person will find Charlotte lacking is silly.

To the OP, be wary of posters that exlcude any objectivity in their responses and are too passionate or immature to express the actual differences in the two cities. The post above is a good example of objectivity, typically, most big city folk prefer a larger metro, etc.

Having limited experiences with the Atlanta metro, I have grown quite fond of Alpharetta and too would recommend this area.
