Consumers have gotten hooked on cheap prices, which are in turn based up cheap (usually immigrant or foreign) labor.
I agree that we need to do a better job of vetting farm workers and paying the true cost of labor. But scapegoating the farmers misses the bigger picture.
Yeah, I guess that's all we can do. Oh, wait, no...how about we allow migrant farm workers to work here legally? Everyone wins -- consumers, business, farm workers.

Well, everyone except the bigots, I guess.
That's way too easy. Are you forgetting that these people BROKE THE LAW??

So in response, we will see how well this bill actually works. Many unemployed Americans complain that "illegal aliens" are taking available jobs because they are willing to work for such little pay. $12.50 is well above minimum wage, and this article states that even with a bonus, it is still difficult to hire new workers.
The jobs are there people. Are you willing to fill the positions?
What percentage of the jobs supposedly taken by illegal immigrants do these farming jobs represent? I suspect it's a fairly small percentage...
Let's not forget that the farm lobbyists who bought the votes of corporate conservatives like Saxby Chambliss have played a major role in subtly encouraging a policy of loosely enforced borders. Unfortunately, we won't hear that inconvenient truth on your typical conservative talk-radio station.
Oh well.
Let the "Joe Sixpacks" work themselves up in a lather over this latest red herring call "immigration reform". They will be in for a rude awakening when the economy contracts even further and they find themselves thousands of dollars poorer than their grandfathers.

The consumers are part of the problem, Scooby. Farmers (most) don't make much, because folks won't pay for their crops - they'll buy the imports from Chile first before paying the higher price for domestic production. The farmers are not scum. That hyperbole is offensive. And, you want to see businesses suffer? That means employees suffer, folks lose jobs, unemployment goes up, the economy reverses what little upward momentum it has, more folks loses houses, more folks need public assistance, etc. Don't you think we're suffering enough as it is? I'm not disagreeing that something needs to be done about the illegal immigrant - you're right, yes it does. But your vitriole is a bit mistargeted I think.
Very true. But consumers are already paying a pretty penny for just about everything else (good, gas, rent etc). Bringing up the price of food would not help (food is not cheap as we speak).
I don't want to ruffle feathers, but after reading the article I am going to say that anyone reading it, may think, we Americans are lazy.
The Latino migrant workers are outpicking their American counterparts by far. I just wish the hypocrisy would stop. We all know deep down that these poor illegals do us more of a favor than we give them credit for. Illegal or not, they stimulate local economies, they pay rent, buy cars, buy food, work for measly wages, clothe their kids, etc. They use less social programs/gov't money than Americans (We all know it's true. We can stop with the BS now).
1. Are some fraudulent? YES. (Most are not, They'd be deported long ago)
2. Are most of them in American Prisons lifting weights, eating 3 square meals, doing nothing? NO
3. Are they causing most of the crimes in America? No
4. Are they ones taking jobs away from Americans? HELL NO!! This and many articles prove we don't even want these jobs. Even ex-offenders are crying on the first day of work. It is hard work, and seemingly Americans can't cut it.
I will say that their presence is somewhat burdensome for some of our programs, (they use the school systems (Trying to better themselves or their kids, (maybe?) and healthcare system). We all know they are a small fraction of those who abuse the system overall. I'm not for ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.
I just hate the hypocrisy. We want everything cheap (food, junk at Walmart produced in China), and wont pay a few more cents (if it can save US jobs), but we point the finger at ILLEGALS (and cheap Chinese things filling our cabinets and garage storage space). Stop the Bull***** already.
