I had originally planned on living right by tech, but people kept telling me it wasn't safe, wasn't worth it, etc...So I'm going to start looking at places slightly further out. I keep hearing about Virginia Highland. Is this a good place for a PhD student? (Consider that I'm coming from UGA, and still have some of the party in me..it'll work it's way out eventually ) .. I definitely want to live in a social, yet safe, area. I want to pay max $1000 (not including utils). I don't really know where to start looking, though. My sister told me this area isn't like others, and I'm not going to find many apartment complexes (ie, promove aint gonna help!). She says most of the places are going to be townhomes, old houses, etc. How would you recommend I start my search? I've been trying to use craigslist, but it's not that great of a resource. Other sites I've used are ajcexchange, kijiji, padmapper, and hotpads. But I'm still having trouble.

Don't get what the trouble is. Just google "apartments" and look at the map. It's pretty easy. What don't you get???

Craigslist is just fine. Search "vahi". Maybe you don't know the lingo.. It's a fairly tiny area, "midtown" is much larger, and most Atlantans don't know where the hell they live anyways...

To be honest, I think my problem goes along with the "most atlantans don't know where they live" statement lol..looking at the map, I wasn't really sure what was considered virginia highlands and what wasn't..it seems like a really small area .. on craigslist, everything seems to be part of virginia highlands, except when I check them out on the map. vahi seems like it will get me some good results, though. thanks

Excuse me?

At any rate, to the OP: Try this website; Braden-Fellman specializes in managing 'vintage' apartment buildings in Va-Hi and other intown areas.

Word to the wise: intown snobs here will eventually call you out for calling it the Virginia Highlands. The proper title is Virginia Highland.
Highland View Apartments | Virginia Highlands Apartments, Atlanta Luxury Apartments for Rent | Perennial Properties
Greenwood & St. Charles Apartments | Virginia Highlands Apartments, Atlanta Luxury Apartments for Rent | Perennial Properties
They also have a property called Highland Walk but that's in Old Fourth Ward, even though their own website says its Va-Hi. People marketing real estate will throw around desirable neighborhood names like there's no tomorrow.
Virginia Highlands apartments in Atlanta, GA 30306 - These are in a great location close to Piedmont Park and a popular shopping area (Trader Joes, Starbucks, theater, restaurants), and just down the street from the center of Va-Hi.

Also, officially Virginia-Highland is bounded on the north by Amsterdam Avenue, on the east by the Atlanta city limit/Briarcliff Road, on the south by Ponce de Leon Avenue, and on the west by the BeltLine which is the border with Piedmont Park and Midtown.

I've noticed this too. Whether it's Craigslist or any of the rental/real estate sites, they often claim specific neighborhoods in the headline or description, but when you look at the location on the map, it's nowhere near that. Grrrr. Now I Google-map everything before I go much further.
