I am in sort of the same predicament. I lived in NYC all my life until I moved to Orlando Florida 2 1/2 years ago. I moved out of NYC because I wanted to be able to afford real estate. I absolutely hate Orlando though. So I'm thinking of a place that might be a bit less fierce than NYC but still have culture and art and be affordable. But I'm an artist who loves an alternative art/music scene. I also hate driving everywhere, so I'm not sure it will be for me. I'm also not too keen on southern redneck types. There are a lot of them here in florida.

Smile Chicago

May I ask: why did you want to move out of Chicago? Seems like a good alternative to NYC except for the harsh winters and being far from the beach.

Default Chicago

I grew up in Chicago and left there when I finished grad school. Parents still live in the same house since before I was born. Since than I have lived in various places overseas and a few around the country. Here in NYC is the longest I have stayed anywhre - 4 yrs - and am getting antsy (and broke!!) My #1 location that I would love to relocate to is San Fran however, financially, it would be similiar to being in NYC. So I am looking at the "second best" opportunity. I am even considering moving back to Chicago - as financially it would make sense compared to NYC, etc, etc. BUT the weather is stopping me a bit as well as a few other things.

But good luck in your search. I might check out Atlanta and visit some friends but I also am starting to think (based on what I heard) too many "redneck types." I lived in Miami for 2.5 yrs and absolutely hated it.

The redneck attitude is more prevalent in the outer suburbs, what I call the "white flight" areas. I don't think you'll see much of that living inside I-285.

Atlanta is NOT a big city in the flavor of NY & Chicago, it's more like LA. Pedestrians are rare and everyone drives everywhere. But Atlanta is a much easier place to live than NY or Chicago -- plus weather is much better year round.
