I think you mean Mark Twain (who only popularized the phase originated by a British Prime Minister, but that is still up for debate). Where are the APS teachers and their erasers when you need them?

The numbers are what they are and people can shift the blame however they want.

The point of the thread being about the Asian influx is well taken. Yes, every post here seems to come back to black/white. This is exactly why we need more Asians...as well as every other group. When I lived in NYC I found it interesting that there were so many different ethnic groups that no one group could focus on another. So, the Asian (et al.) influence will only help to ease black/white tensions over time. Not to mention they'll help to improve the schools - oops, that's stereotyping (pay no attention to the fact that 44% hold bachelor degrees or higher vs. 25.3% for whites and 13.6% for blacks - these numbers are a few years old).

Well, if you want to take it there, Atlanta could also use more Black African immigrants. They actually tend to hold even more bachelor and advanced degrees than the Asians.

Quote:
African immigrants to the U.S. are more highly educated than any other native-born ethnic group including white Americans. Some 48.9 percent of all African immigrants hold a college diploma. This is more than double the rate of native-born white Americans, and nearly four times the rate of native-born African Americans.[10]

In 1997, 19.4 percent of all adult African immigrants in the United States held a graduate degree, compared to 8.1 percent of adult white Americans and 3.8 percent of adult black Americans in the United States, respectively.[11] This information suggests that America has an equally large achievement gap between whites and African/Asian immigrants as it does between white and black Americans.

I'm in no way racist but I would think that the reason for this is because they would be the only ones with the means to rise above their hardships and immigrate here, also they would have more of a motivation to leave than their white african counterparts.

You are absolutely right. Africans do and we do need more to compensate. In my experience, the Africans say they are not treated well by the southern blacks because of their desire for higher education. And yes, it's more than "this one African I know...". I work tangentially with a group that builds education facilities in Africa. Until southern blacks stop viewing education as "acting white" they have no hope.

Keeping this on topic, the Asian performacw gap is widening. Everyone can stand to take a page out of their book (no pun intended).

^You need to account for how Asian immigrants got here vs. other countries. Countries like China/Korea/India/Taiwan sent a solid chunk of their immigrants from the middle/upper middle class in the form of international students. A lot of these people already have a bachelors and were able to compete for the minuscule number of spots for non-US citizens. Most of these people are very big on higher education and had the means to travel halfway around the world. You would expect these people to place a higher value on education. My parents were considered very good students in order to have gotten the necessary scholarships to bring them to the US for grad school. This is the same case for Africans that come here on student visas.

Asians that tended to come over as refugees don't have the same educational attainment and that suggests that Asians as a whole aren't necessarily smarter but there are a whole lot of them. If you look at the top 25% in intelligence in India, you're going to have more people than all the US. If you look at how many illiterate people are in India, you'll also come in at several hundred million. The US is just in a very advantageous position in that it gets to pick and choose who comes over.

Schools like GA Tech and Emory are a big draw for Asians. I wish there was a China-Town or an Asian area in Midtown/Downtown where all the Asian shops/restaurants are instead of being spread out all over the place like they are now. This would be a big draw for the city, I know when I have traveled to NYC, Seattle, Portland, San Fran, London, etc..I always made it a point to visit Chinatown because it's interesting, fun and festive.

Yeah the notion that Asian in general are more intelligent and educated is silly when you actually look at the statistics in their own countries. Poverty, child prostitution, disease and illiteracy would not be so rampant in Asia if all these people were geniuses. The stereotype is silly. People like mceis push this stereotype that ignores real issues among the Asian race.

People will form stereotypes from what they see in their environment. Whether they are true or not is up to the individual to determine. There's no point arguing back and forth to try to change each other's opinion. Like someone mentioned before, there are criminals as well as educated, hard-working people in every race and nationality.

This can apply to the Asians as well.
