Well, I know it's easier said than done, but you've just gotta keep at it and, most importantly, MAKE connections. I know the frustration of writing a mountain of cover letters for jobs that are quite possibly already taken or never existed in the first place. It's dehumanizing and disheartening, moreso than a lot of people realize. Just do ANYTHING you can to get a leg up on the competition and get the inside track into a job.

Best of luck to you!

If you think Atlanta salaries are low compared to the cost of living, you should see what it's like in Florida.

When we moved back to FL from GA, our monthly expenses increased by at least $400/ mo and our salary decreased by $4,000. (and the max you can get for unemployment in Fl is $275/week vs $330/ week in GA). Auto insurance doubled in FL and our electric bill is $100+ more a month for a much smaller house that is 30 years newer!

Wow, that sucks. I know people in NC who have gotten almost $500/week on unemployment.

That's not entirely true. A big part of it is what field, what position you're looking for. Hell, if any of us actually wanted to be migrant farm workers, I bet we'd be hired on the spot. But who among us wants to do that kind of backbreaking work?

I heard Anthony Bourdain on Bill Maher last night laying down some truth:

This was obviously written by someone who has not lost their job and doesn't know anyone who has.

My DH was laid off in early 2008, in a sector where the jobs are not coming back unless you speak Chinese (he's an electronics engineer). He has reinvented himself twice - once doing sales for an Israeli company that couldn't make payroll, and another time literally cleaning toilets, which didn't pay him enough to cover his gas to get to work. He recently landed a new job (thanks to networking connections) and it's a gift after what we've been through in the last 3 years, but it pays less then half his former salary.

Anyone who thinks the market is "normal" isn't paying attention. Being patient only lasts as long as your savings account - which for us was about a year and a half.

No, I think "weak housing market" is a bit more accurate.

I agree. The housing industry was a huge deal here and for a while it virtually ground to a halt. Of course that affected all the related businesses like real estate, building materials, lending, logistics, etc.

There's some building going on now but it's a shadow of what it used to be.

I really don't see how transit has much to do with it.
