It was a crackhead idea that never got serious consideration from anyone. No one took that 'proposal' seriously outside of the city-data forum that tends to live in a world outside of reality. The idea was laughable and the fact that people still mention it shows how little knowledge they have of transportation funding.

Here, B2R, lemme try to say what corndog was unwilling or unable to say.

Technically speaking, anything short of light speed travel is possible if given enough time and resources. But realistically I just don't see the East Side Tunnel happening. None of those residents are going to want carbon monoxide vents in their backyard. Also, a modest amount of surface space would have to be taken for freeway entrances and exits.

However, I have heard ideas of turning the Downtown Connector into a tunnel and putting greenspace on top, much like Boston did with I-93 downtown. That'd still be expensive, but nowhere nearly as costly as digging through several miles of gneiss and granite. And unlike the East Side Tunnel, nobody would get displaced or receive more traffic from this.

No. You too are clueless. It is not a matter of residents preference. That has nothing to do with this being a ridiculous 'idea'. It is a matter that this would easily cost $5-10 billion. There is no justification for such a project. Even if you toll the road, there is absolutely no way to make this economically feasible. This has nothing to do with resident's preferences or surface space issues.

Easy on the attitude, man. You think that the Stone Mountain Freeway and I-485 (in-town) were stopped because of a lack of funding?

You again, are missing the point.

This never even got that far because the project was so ridiculous. The cost of such a project made sure that it never even made it that far. Sure, neighborhood opposition could that have become a problem down the road, but this 'idea', calling a project is generous given the fact that it never got anywhere, NEVER got anywhere for a reason. It made no sense and was stomped out early.

How about you post proof the project was heavily considered instead.

The project made a few mile-long project lists and was promptly discarded.

Atlanta quickly discards any idea with public opposition. This also had the city of Atlanta opposed. It never got to serious economic study.

I doubt it would be economically feasible, but mostly it was not politically feasible.
