Good news! Atlanta could use an additional 3000 students here spending money in the local economy

Atlanta Church Saves Morris Brown With Donation | News | BET

This Sunday the Cascade United Methodist Church of Atlanta handed over a large check to Morris Brown College, helping the school eliminate its hefty debt to the U.S. Department of Education.

“We are truly, truly blessed that you have embraced us in this campaign,” Morris Brown President Stanley Pritchett said on Sunday. [The check] helps us to insure that the future is stable for Morris Brown Colored College and all of our HBCU institutions.”

Rev. Dr. Marvin Moss presented the $22,000 check to the school's president on Sunday after initiating a nearly month-long fundraising effort on behalf of the college. Moss galvanized his membership through special offerings and online donations from members.

Why would a student choose to go to a school that has lost is accreditation which can take 5 years to restore?

This may be good for the school - this donation, but $500k to relieve $9.9 million owed to the US Govt doesn't sound like a good deal for the feds.

The federal government agreed in May to eliminate the historically black college's $9.9 million debt, provided the school pays the reduced amount by Aug. 24.

3,000 was their peak. Their enrollment dropped to around 40 and as of 2009 was about 120 and is now about 85.

$22,000 is a drop in the bucket. Kennesaw State just finished a $75 million capital campaign and they finished it a year early during a recession. How can Morris Brown continue to enroll students in good faith? Even if MB managed to get back accreditation, it still would be a very weak academic institution.

Morris Brown either should find a "Sugar Daddy" (which might mean a name change), merge with CAU, or just close down. Donating money to MB is throwing good money after bad which is particularly worrisome in this economy. CAU could make better use of that money. People are probably sentimental about MB but unless they can raise many millions of dollars, it would be better for MB to close or be taken over. I suppose re-accreditation would open funds from UNCF but it would be better for them to continue giving that money to other HBCUs. Or at least MB should drop any pretense of being a college of higher learning and teach trades such as cosmetology, HVAC repair, and mortuary science. Georgia Perimeter and Atlanta Metropolitan fulfill any role MB hoped to fill and are better at it.

There are still thousands of teens who are ready to move to Atlanta after HS

I do not recommend they enroll at Morris Brown. There are a lot of accredited schools in Atlanta. If they are weak academically, Georgia Perimeter and Atlanta Metropolitan are accredited, affordable, and will take any high school graduate.

Hope Scholarships have been extended to schools that lost accreditation over the past 7 years and later extended to 11 years. If the state is looking for ways to reduce Hope costs, drop the unaccredited schools.

Morris Brown needs to become a part of the University System of Georgia and then renamed Morris Brown State University.

I think a future medium-sized public university just west of Downtown Atlanta would be good for the students in the state of Georgia and good for the AUC.

MBSU!

Why prop it up and burden the University System? The University System is struggling as it is with cutbacks, and a sickly debt laden Morris Brown is that last thing it needs. If anything, a Morris Brown State University might hurt CAU in the long run as a MBSU will have subsidized tuition and building projects paid for by the state of Georgia. The best option is for MB to finish paying its 5 cents on the dollar debt to the federal government, then merge with CAU. The Feds should have made that latter stipulation as a condition to that sweetheart deal (guess John Lewis strong-armed the Feds to come up with that terrible deal for the taxpayers).

If there is any new state supported HBCU in Atlanta, it should be CAU with an absorbed Morris Brown campus.

Anyone who spends a dime to attend Morris Brown is an idiot. What is the point of a 'college degree' if it isn't recognized by anybody? Send me $9.95 and I'll send you a diploma from GTCorndog A&M College. For an additional $5, you can graduate with high honors. Both diplomas are worth the same.
