I know they are building the new International Terminal to the east. I once saw a map showing a proposed South Terminal will this ever get built? and what would they have used it for? It's been years since I've flown out of that airport remembering flying out of the old original terminal to the north while seeing the concourses under construction in 1980. Will there actually be a South Terminal??

There is both a North and a South terminal. Delta pretty much owns the South terminal. It's been there, I think, since the present airport was constructed.

Its preliminary called the South Gate Complex and its still on the airport master project list (and in their offices, its on the airport map as well). Its suppose to go on the land across the Cargo section by the 5th runway.

They used to have a timeframe on the website but they took it down.

Oh no I don't mean the main terminal facing west that's divided south and north. It's a separate building on the south side of the airport.

PKCorey, makes me wonder if it gets built that there will also be a south entrance off I-285 and if people mover will loop all the way around the airport connecting everything. This would make HJA one of the most developed airport in the world.

Oh. Hmm. That's interesting. Do you have a website with info?

I too would like to know any update on this topic. Also, I wonder since a location for a second airport was not identified, will HJA be constructing a sixth runway in order to accommodate more flights?

Perhaps not an "update" but does anyone know where to find any information - even old information - on this?

I don't have any links but my understanding of the situation is this:

Delta and Airtran both want a sixth runway to be built NORTH of the fifth runway. I don't think they want the south gate complex at all: more gates = more possible competition. Meanwhile, College Park and Hapeville oppose a sixth runway on the airport's current footprint, but I think they are fine with the south gate complex.

It might be possible to build both: a south gate complex AND the sixth runway north of the fifth. But it will be difficult and the gate complex will be a lot more modest than what we currently have. Probably for smaller planes mainly. And some air cargo complexes are down there--need to address those.

Going SOUTH of the fifth runway for an additional runway would be extremely difficult. The current grade of the airport is almost at exactly 1000', but south of the fifth runway it gets way lower (to 900' in places). Plus that's where we got all the fill for the fifth runway, so we'd be digging hole and filling it in again. No matter what, an additional crossing of 285 will be needed, but a billion dollars can do amazing things I guess.

These are some of the issues that will presumably be addressed by the revamping the airport's master plan. My feelings on all of the above issues are mixed.
